“There’s No Scripture That Forbids Tattoos for Christians” — Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo

Popular Nigerian pastor and relationship coach, Kingsley Okonkwo, has stirred conversations online after stating that there is no biblical scripture that expressly forbids Christians from having tattoos.

His remarks followed a viral video that surfaced on social media showing the clergyman getting a tattoo drawn on his hand, a clip that quickly attracted mixed reactions from believers and critics alike. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Speaking during a recent interview, Pastor Okonkwo argued that opposition to tattoos within Christian circles is often rooted in personal convictions, denominational doctrines, or individual interpretations, rather than clear biblical instruction.

He warned against imposing personal beliefs on others under the guise of spirituality, stressing that such practices do not align with proper Christian teachings.

According to him, Christians should be guided by their personal relationship with Christ and their understanding of the Word of God, rather than public opinion or religious pressure.

The pastor also challenged critics to provide both scriptural and scientific evidence to prove that tattoos are inherently sinful or spiritually harmful. He noted that while many people are quick to condemn body art, very few can clearly explain why it is considered wrong.

In his words, he said in part:

“There’s no scripture that says a child of God cannot have a tattoo. Many people are simply acting on personal preferences, what the Holy Spirit told them, or their church policies, and then trying to impose it on others. That is not how these things work.”

“If someone believes tattoos are bad, they should be able to explain it clearly. Does drawing ink on the body affect the brain or change a person’s character? People should give both scriptural and scientific proof, not just shout religious sentiments without clarity.”

Pastor Okonkwo’s comments have since sparked intense discussions online, with opinions divided between those who support his stance and others who insist that tattoos contradict Christian values.

This is a issue of acceptability and spirituality.

What really mattered here was what inspired him to draw the tattoo. If the Holy Spirit isn’t behind the inspiration to have a tattoo then some other spirit must have.

He can eventually clean it up, but many will be led to go a wrong route via his action. As a shepherd (pastor) care has to be taken as you no longer live a life of your own but living in submission and agreement with the spirit of God that’s in you.

There are several scriptures that forbid tattoos actually. This is one of them:

Leviticus 19:28 says: "You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the Lord,"
