On February 2, 2026, Onitsha Main Market — one of Nigeria's biggest commercial hubs — officially reopened its gates after a one-week temporary shutdown ordered by Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo.

The closure came as punishment for traders' continued observance of Monday "sit-at-home" orders (linked to regional security and IPOB issues), costing the state billions in lost revenue weekly. Governor Soludo had warned of stricter measures if markets stayed shut on Mondays, but today marks a return to normalcy — with security assurances from the state.

In this exclusive morning footage:
Traders and shoppers gradually returning to shops and stalls

Busy walkways with people carrying goods and opening up for business

Signs of life in the usually packed market sections
Some areas still quieter than usual, showing hesitation from fear or uncertainty
Is this a big win for Soludo against sit-at-home enforcers, or just partial compliance?
I challenge this person to make a video of main market on any other working day and compare it to today's video.

Some mu.mu people are here jubulilating. When Main market opens, you won't even get a space to walk because cars would've blocked all the roads. No vehicular movement as well but see how empty the road is.

Make una no dey mumuni una self. This is not up to a tenth of the market when it is opened

Soludo is just wasting his time

That Monday sit at home has come to stay in igboland

I don't even think the release of Maazị Kanu will end it

Because so many of our people have come to realize that Mondays is a very important resting day now

Is it in south east they jailed him,
At everyone tried for his release, they refused.
Continuous sit at home won't make them release him,is a gradual process.
It is dialogue and diplomacy that will lead to his release, maybe is the sit at home that kept him in cell.
Look at how Nigeria is and we are doing sit at home,
Please, pity for your Igbo brothers and sisters.
I know people that relocated because of sit at home.
Let us show good moral.

Other states are turning to Dubai and China, South East is busy doing sit at home, hope our head is correct?
When are we going to have sense?
Instead of planning how to turn southeast to America, they are busy sitting at home,

Be wise,illiteracy is bad.
The cause of all these is lack of education.
Stop destroying south east,

we don't care if we sell or not.the message is simple we will no longer succumb to fear and threats by failed and lazy men in the bush that don't want to do anything in their life using biafra struggle to cover their laziness and drug addiction. Enough is enough we will only observe sit at home on 30th may like before

I've never been a fan of sit at home except if it is for the sole purpose of getting the world to understand that Nnamdi Kanu being behind bars is simply political. If the people have embraced a Monday sit at home, the governor doesn't have a right to lock up their shops. They aren't his government workers which he pays through funds from this market. These marketers pay other dues and levies to the government. They can choose to stay at home if they want.

Meanwhile, what's the essence of opening on Monday and customers refuse to come out? Will he force them to come out as well?
The huge investors in the market are mainly from other geopolitical zones like the North and south west. When the shops open, how will they come down to Onitsha? Will they fly? Many have lost their trucks and tankers to this sit at home. Do you really think they will be willing to risk it?

Why didn't he leave the security people there to protect the traders every monday? Even the security guys are scared for their lives. They always avoid the highway on Mondays. You only see very few army guys on the road, police is never around. Is it that same police that will protect the people?

You need to stay in the east on Mondays to understand. If they people have embraced it, then let them be. Other major markets in Onitsha refuse to open as well.

Soludo should leave half his convoy at Awka before coming down let us know if he won't be jittery.

The same soludo went to an even and noticed a funny movement, he immediately thought it was unknown gun men and was already making a run for it. We should stop acting like we have 2 lives at home just to prove a point.

The citizens have spoken, they want to keep staying at home so let them be. He was trying to cover shame by claiming he loved the turn out. If he truly loved the turn out then why does the want to demolish 10,000 shops?

Not everything is done with force, last week the Onitsha head bridge was blocked and a riot almost started. If he had locked the shop for one extra week, he would've seen what his eyes have never seen before, that's why he decided to open the market.
