I think the Male Praying Mantis are the ones that died during mating. The Female Matis literally eat him while he has his reproductive organ stuck in her.

This also apply to another specie of Spider that gobbled up the male while mating, the Black Widow I think.

Actually, that saying comes from the fact that after laying her eggs, the Oka will ingest them again and the incubation takes place withing her body and the hatchlings will need to eat her from the inside to gain their freedom. In the process, she dies.

That's why the yorubas after careful observations over centuries of witnessing this came up with that saying : Omo inu oka ni nse iku pa oka.

child birth is not as easy as we think, except God makes it easy for you. Most people are drained after childbirth and there could also be complications which eventually leads to death.

Often times, people prefer the CS route than the natural route but mind you, both has it’s own disadvantage.

Some lay their eggs and incubation is done outside of the snake body while some ingest the eggs laid and incubation takes place within her body. For these species, the hatchlings will have to eat her up from withing hence she dies.
