Them don talk why them dey switch off power wen rain falls. It's left for the government to do the needful and upgrade our electrical systems to match with advanced countries. Especially that part that said that most of our power cables still hang on overhead poles in our streets. This is a government responsibility, they have to take action. Under studying how advance countries distribute their electricity and replicating it here is not a bad thing na. Corruption nor go cripple this country. |

Zorn:It's not a lame explanation. It's where we are. Even as a kid, I knew why power goes when it's raining or about to rain. Of course, we should upgrade. But this is where we are now. |

descarado:I once suggested a long time ago, online, that we should bury our wires for power supply purposes. The responses I got suggested that 1) it would be too expensive 2) it would make isolating a fault on the line much more difficult. Also, as for our archaic power system, that's easy. We don;'t pay a cost reflective tarrif for power, so the power companies cannot afford the massive upgrades they need to do to fix things. Government could do it, but it would involve borrowing at least 20 trillion yearly for the next ten years. And then the loans have to be paid. Ministry of power may be corrupt, but since the discos and gencos were created, about the only thing they have direct control over is the transmisson system, and maybe rural electrification. And then oversight of the discos and gencos, and that's it. They don't directly run how the power is supplied. Since 2013 self. |

hush15:UK buries its power lines, at least in the cities, and outside the cities, they don't do so..so power cuts may happen if the weather is adverse.(Note...adverse weather means a massive ultra massive storms). UK also has everyone pay a cost reflective tarrif, which means their sector can afford to pay for a very strong power supply system that can whitstand storms and the likes. Also in the UK, if you can;t pay, they cut you off. Simple. That;s something Nigeria doesn't have because government policy and 'we are poor'. |

Nigeria has some of the best weather on earth. One, our weather is relatively moderate, rain is not excessive, dry season is not prolonged. Two, our weather is reasonably predictable. We know almost to a month when the rains start and end, when the harmattan comes and goes. We don't have the heat of Arabia, or the rains of south America or the blizzards of north Europe or the tornadoes of middle America. Weather should be the last thing power companies complain about. The dry season lasts a minimum of four months in the wettest part of this country yet they do NOTHING to address these issues before hand. Such a lazy, indolent set of people that will never do preventive maintenance, even if their lives depended on it. |
