“Nigeria Is Better Than It Was Three Years Ago” — Wahab Okoya Sparks Debate by alphonsoolajide(op): 8:22am On Feb 05
Wahab Okoya, son of Nigerian billionaire industrialist Razaq Okoya, has sparked widespread debate on social media after stating that Nigeria is better today than it was three years ago, arguing that the government is not receiving enough recognition for visible improvements.

Okoya made the remarks during a public conversation, where he suggested that progress in the country is more noticeable to Nigerians who studied abroad and later returned home. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

According to him, improvements in infrastructure, lifestyle, and the general environment show that the country is moving in a better direction compared to previous years.

“If you compare Nigeria today to Nigeria three years ago, we are getting better,” Okoya said.
“For those of us who went to school abroad and came back, the change is very visible. We are not giving the government enough credit.”

His comments immediately gained traction online, drawing both support and strong criticism from Nigerians who questioned whether such progress reflects the everyday realities of the average citizen.

While some agreed that progress can be gradual and uneven, many Nigerians pushed back against Okoya’s assessment, citing rising inflation, high cost of living, unemployment, and insecurity as dominant issues still affecting daily life.

Here are some reactions from social media:

@bod_republic: “I for talk o… but at what cost.”

@iamjlamar1: “If person talk now, na DSS una go take find person up and down.”

@umenta: “You don’t ask a rich kid about living conditions. Ask a market woman or a bricklayer who survives on daily income.”

@mr_chiboi: “Interesting perspective. Change can be slow and uneven, but giving credit shouldn’t blind us to issues like security and infrastructure.”

The comments have reignited discussions around privilege, lived experience, and economic inequality, with many arguing that perceptions of national progress often differ sharply depending on social class.

While Okoya’s statement highlights optimism about Nigeria’s direction, critics insist that any assessment of improvement must account for the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians struggling with basic necessities.

The boy statement simply affirm and confirm the disconnect the reality of the poor downtrodden masses face from the opulence displayed by the elites and irresponsible political leadership in Nigeria today.

Nigeria have improved tremendously to this rich brat kid, yet he has been schooling abroad for the past 3 years( with sufficient forex to pursue his education), the president and the elites are rushing abroad for healthcare tourism while the teaching hospitals are death slabs. Adams Oshiomole is caressing a chick legs on board a private jet.

Compare all these luxury to the suffering of more than 200M citizens facing suffering from poverty, inflation, unemployment, increasing cost of living, economic instability among many ills of our national life.

This is the same person who shamelessly acknowledge he didn’t even know the current price of fuel in Nigeria until he was informed. He simply have no idea of the ripple economic effects this has on the life of the common man.

This is a classical example of the disconnect" between elite perception and the ground reality. Well even his own brethren strongly disagree with him.

Seems you people don't have better things to do with your time and Internet bandwidth.

That's why Nigeria is where it is today...

Wasting time on unnecessary back-and-forth arguments and comparisons.

No light
No pipe-borne water
Bandits are ravaging towns and states
Poor health care
Weak institutions

It’s easy to say “Nigeria is better” when you grew up rich, schooled in the UK, and live in comfort. When fuel price, food cost, rent, and insecurity don’t touch you, of course everything looks fine.
Re: “Nigeria Is Better Than It Was Three Years Ago” — Wahab Okoya Sparks Debate by Mitsurugi(m): 10:07am On Feb 05

Perspectives....

He's rights because he's seeing Nigeria from a perspective of wealth. That's how the 1% of the 1% see Nigeria.

But the majority of Nigerians are seeing the country differently in which they are also correct.

For those that don't know how food is placed on their table, how their cars are fueled, how their bills are settled, Nigeria is better than it was in the past few years. But for those that pass through stress before they see the money to buy food in the market, those that their house rent takes a bigger chunk of their income, for those that their transport cost is consuming a lion share of their budget, for those that if they don't break a sweat, they won't settle their bills, for those that survival of the fittest is their daily experience, they are the ones that can truly tell if Nigeria is better than it was before, or getting worse.

These sort of people need not be taken seriously.

A teenager that has lived in affluence and abundance all his life in a particular area of a state in a country cannot relate to the ordeals of his age mate born in the extreme opposite of his situation.

Just let him speak. It’s ignorance.

When did the opinion of a Nineteen year old start to matter in this country? Is it because the father is a billionaire? Somebody who should be taking permission from the father before speaking in public. Arrant nonsense.

As long as what we deem success is others... The Elite and their ostentatious lives which the down dream instead of honourable dreams, then this is not even the tip of the iceberg.
Hardly you see them come out to speak for dignity, rather it is when they are in problem.

Anyone who cares to listen to the discourse will learn other meaningful things than what is stated here. There's no point debating his personal opinion. He's limited to what he sees around him anyway.

At 19, he's indeed a vibrant, focused and well brought up child who is thankful for what he has but working towards improving on the family legacy.

He works in the factory when he's around and has his own unique product. He stressed being involved in legitimate businesses.

He's smart enough to know that courtship is for those who are old and mature enough to handle it considering the responsibilities involved. He's single but politely turned down one aunty who asked him out on a date right on set. He managed the begging ladies stylishly. My gender really needs to do better. We were taught to be independent as children irrespective of gender. How people have become so entitled to other's wealth amazes me.

The strange thing is that it's the children of the not so buoyant that will have girlfriends they have to "hustle" to buy expensive phones for as teenagers, instead of focusing on their future. Thereby, they venture into crime and ultimately end up badly. Poverty also multiplies that way.
