FG CONCESSIONS IKERE GORGE DAM IN OYO STATE FOR HYDROPOWER GENERATION

The Federal Government has officially handed over the 6MW Ikere Gorge Hydropower Plant, located in Iseyin, to Messrs Quaint Power and Infrastructure Nigeria under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) concession arrangement in Oyo State.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation Prof. Joseph Utsev and Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu performed the handover ceremony.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, described the concession as a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s drive to bridge infrastructure financing gaps and enhance sustainable power generation through private sector participation.

Prof Utsev commended the vision behind the establishment of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), noting its critical role in ensuring transparency, value for money, and efficiency in PPP-driven infrastructure development, emphasized the importance of leveraging private sector expertise and capital to complement public investments.
He noted that the Ikere Gorge Hydropower Plant is the product of a long-standing collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation and the Federal Ministry of Power, dating back to 2012, aimed at harnessing Nigeria’s hydropower potential

The Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to private sector-driven growth in the power sector, describing the handover as a new chapter in sustainable energy development.

He noted that the Ikere Gorge Dam, initially developed for water supply and irrigation, is now being repositioned as a strategic asset for clean and renewable energy generation.

Ikere Gorge Dam

The Ikere Gorge Dam is a major earth-fill dam in Iseyin local government area of Oyo State in the south west of Nigeria on the Ogun River. Reservoir capacity is 690 million m3. The dam was initiated by the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo and started in 1983 by the administration of Shehu Shagari. The dam was planned to generate 37.5 MW of electricity, to supply water to local communities and to Lagos and to irrigate 12,000 hectares of land. Built in 1982/1983, work on the dam was abandoned by subsequent military governments. A report for the UN in 2004 said that, no irrigation had taken place so far, but efforts were being made to implement one of the five planned irrigation projects. The project was based on the sprinkler system which is difficult to manage and requires that the farmers be trained.

Failed hydropower project

The dam was built to support a hydropower project, but due to equipment shortages and environmental changes, the project has remained a mirage. Additionally, it has an impact on fish farming.

The majority of local residents lack access to power. A 33-KVA rural electrification project in the region was launched by the federal government years ago. However, the only remaining traces of that endeavor are the concrete poles.

The first elected president of Nigeria, Shehu Shagari, had a hydropower project planned with the dam in the 1980s that was also scrapped. Even the German business Garbe, Lahmeyer & Co., which produced the two turbines used to generate electricity from the dam, went out of business in 1993.

As a result of the 40-year abandonment of the project, the multi-million equipment including alternators, two turbines of 3-MW each and other electrical components are now rusty.

There are many dams in the south-west that were conceived in the late 1970s and early 1980s and they have the potential to generate electricity, but most of them have been abandoned. These include:

Ikere Gorge Dam (Oyo)

Oyan Dam (Ogun)

Ogbese Dam (Ekiti)

Looking at pivotal abandoned and salvageable infrastructure projects is something Tinubu seems focused on.

Kudos to him because many of these projects were strategic and destined to make huge socio-economic positive impact for Nigeria.

Commendable from PBAT.

I believe in line with the recent restructuring done in the power sector which seeks to decentralize power generation, distribution and transmission. Thus giving power to states to have control over how power is managed, most of the abandoned power projects will come back to life.

Asejire, in Ibadan. All these and many more, including non hydro power plants scattered across will help us achieve the sufficiency we need if there being used optimally. We should be able to generate at least 10000mw or more.

Kudos to President Pbat, while Buhari imported insecurity to his NW region. I haven't seen an unfortunate leader like that clown.

One very admirable thing about Tinubu is that he is not long on playing politics to the detriment of Nigeria. He'll work with former enemies to move Nigeria foeward if they have something to offer.

He will revitalise abandoned project he feels will aid the progress of Nigeria regardless of his personal feelings towards the Government that abandoned the project.

Yar Adua was closest to Tinubu in this regard with ObJ being vindictive, dictatorial, destructive, intolerant of opposition and a vainglorious abuser of power.

GEJ was weak and lacking political will to stand his ground in terms of doing what is best for Nigeria shunning Lagos to Calabar coastal road ,for example, that is a game-changer foe his native SS and Nigeria at large simply to avoid upseting the North.

Buhari is likely worst with his feudal and ethno-fascist outlook aided by his Fulani supremacist inner crew who ran Nigeria from 2015 to 2023 and shamelessly tried to create a Nigeria where Fulanis were accountable to no one and above the law.

Tinubu s best by far since 1999.

Whoa! I logged on to NL for the FIRST time today after a busy schedule and one of the first three headlines I saw on the NL frontpage is the Ikere Gorge Dam in Oyo State which the former President Shehu Shagari started back in 1981 but it hasn't been completed till date.

Those Military dictatorships totally abandoned it and I remember reading decades back that the the brand new turbines which were brought in from Germany had become damaged through rust over the years.

I'm highly impressed that the FG under President 'Bola Tinubu is finally tackling this highly embarrassing hydro dam non-completion since 1981, through the PPP format of concessioning, so, that electricity, portable drinking water from the dam to Lagos and contiguous States, and irrigation for all-year round agriculture by farmers in the South West can take place.

Just as I stated about the non-completion of the Ikere Gorge dam here on NL in 2025, it's a big SHAME on former President Olusegun Obasanjo that he couldn't finish the Ikere Gorge dam in his 8 years in office despite his allegedly being from the South West region of Nigeria. That dam is a low-hanging fruit and I suggested that if 'Bola Tinubu can find a way to make that dam work for the benefit of Nigeria, then he'll be writing his name in the sands of time. NOW he's doing something through Adelabu. Kudos to them all.

True that.

If these dams are strategically positioned, they would be able to provide all-year round irrigation for agriculture and that would crash the price of food. Those who governed Nigeria in the past especially the military dictatorship of IBB, Abacha and even OBJ as a civilian President did Nigeria dirty by abandoning the completion of Ikere Gorge dam
.

It was part of former President Shehu Shagari's plan as of 1981 to ensure that Ikere Gorge dam provided drinkable water to as far as Lagos State.

If you are looking at a standard Nigerian mix of residential users, a 6MW dam is a great "mini-grid" solution for a medium-sized town of about 6,000 to 8,000 households with average daily consumption ranging from 0.2kW to 1.2kW. This specific project is capable of up to 37.5MW. The additional perks are the water works and the irrigation system integrated into the project.

Hopefully, the minister of power will not come and tell Oyo people that he was the one who personally made it happen by himself, in a bid to become governor.

That's highly impressive. This Channels Television video of the Ogbese Dam located in Ekiti South of Ekiti State is relatively recent and it's completion was due for 2025. It's good that abandoned projects around Nigeria are being completed instead of starting new ones. That's financial prudence. Kudos to the FG under President 'Bola Tinubu and his team.
