Question: Is it allowed to greet others or talk during the Friday Khutbah (sermon)?

Answer:
Attending Jumu`ah prayer requires complete silence and attentive listening to the Imam during the Khutbah. Speaking during the sermon is not permissible except in very limited cases, such as:

**Speaking directly to the Imam or responding to him when necessary.
**Urgent situations, like preventing harm (e.g., saving a blind person from falling).

Key Points:
-Talking to others, even to tell them to be quiet, is considered idle talk and invalidates your Jumu`ah prayer.
-Greeting others with Salam or responding to greetings during the Khutbah is not allowed.
-The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “If you say to your companion when the Imam is preaching on Friday, ‘Be quiet and listen,’ you have engaged in idle talk.” (Narrated by Al-Bukhari 892, Muslim 851)
-Abu Ad-Darda’ was told by the Prophet (peace be upon him) that speaking during the Khutbah results in gaining nothing but idle talk. (Narrated by Ahmad 20780, Ibn Majah 1111)
-Scholars like Ibn ‘Abd Al-Barr and Ibn Rushd affirm the obligation to remain silent and listen attentively during the Khutbah.
-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymin and Shaykh Al-Albani emphasized that greeting or speaking during the Khutbah is prohibited.

Some people even have telephone calls, it's frustrating. I think people don't learn social etiquette before they go out, so the institutions outside now have to teach them how to behave. A sign of maturity is how you regulate your behaviour socially in different environments. Not everything they need to write out for you.
