Top 30 Countries By Electricity Production Capacity by DrMB(op): 7:08pm On Feb 06
Nigeria is the fifth-largest producer of electricity in Africa (2023), the most striking takeaway is that China's capacity is nearly 72,000% larger than Nigeria's actual generation of 40,959 GWh.
With an annual generation of 40,959 GWh for over 200 million people, Nigeria provides roughly 186 kWh per person per year.
However, the Global Standard for a country to transition to a "Middle Income" economy, the World Bank suggests a minimum of 2,000–3,000 kWh per person.
A citizen in the United States or Japan consumes more electricity in a few weeks than the average Nigerian consumes in an entire year. This limits Nigeria to a "trading and service" economy rather than a "manufacturing" economy.
🇳🇬 Nigeria is the 5th largest power producer in Africa, but here is the cold, hard truth: China generates more power in 15 minutes than Nigeria does in an entire year.
Is Nigeria’s problem a lack of capacity or a lack of distribution? If you had 24/7 uninterrupted power today, what business would you start tomorrow? Let’s talk in the comments. Be honest. 👇

Re: Top 30 Countries By Electricity Production Capacity by DrMB(op): 7:48pm On Feb 06
The World Bank says you need 2,000 kWh per person to be a "Middle Income" country. Nigeria provides just 186 kWh.
When we compare our ~41k GWh of annual power to China’s 2.95 Billion kW capacity, we aren't just looking at numbers, we’re looking at why our factories are closing.
Last year, Nigerian manufacturers spent ₦1.11 Trillion just to keep their own lights on. That’s money that should have gone into new jobs, better tech, and cheaper products.
We have the gas. We have the people. We have the "Capacity" on paper. So why is the grid still collapsing?

You will never find Nigeria in this kind of statistics, Na to de claim useless giant of Africa for mouth.

Our useless leaders keeps deceiving themselves. Just imagine what they are doing with the Electoral Act Amendments.. Obviously they hate to embrace any good thing that will move the country forward. It's just a shame!

Nigeria has bigger problems preventing the creation of jobs….a majority poorly educated/uneducated and unskilled population. Put in the power today and you will find you don’t have the Local skilled resources to fill the vacancies.

Manual labour, yes, skilled jobs no! Even our carpenters, bricklayers, painters etc come from neighboring countries.

The grid will keep collapsing in as much as it's national

What we need is each independent regional grid, state grid may not be viable but regional grid will

Exactly, just to power your personal home is a problem let alone factories, Imagine spending average of 300K a month for fuel to power just your home, nor be juju be Anyway there is a point to reach when it will stabilize itself.

You think? I think Electricity should be given to the private sector to handle 100 %,from Generation to distribution ad rentails like it is done in other climes. These government agencies are the bottle necks for the problem, they should use the Dangote approach.

Not only top 10, bro.

We should be at the very top of the list since Tinubu’s APC Pẹnkẹlẹmẹs minister said that 75% of us have adequate electricity, thereby validating Fashola’s promise to deliver electricity in 6 months, once we follow his advice to get rid of PDP deregulation and privatisation prosperity politicians.

So Egypt generates over 50m KW of electricity... While we're still battling with 40,000 KW.

But when we want to speak or write about that 40,0000 KW, how we export electricity to neighbouring countries, and how we are the giant of Africa... Yen yen yen... You would think these other countries aren't making any progress.

I always implore Nigerians to travel... Travel...!

With 24/7 electricity, SMEs would explode overnight - cold storage, welding, agro-processing, data centers. Power isn’t just infrastructure, it’s the foundation of jobs, skills, and productivity.

Are you working with other people to return us to PDP deregulation and privatisation policies that gave us 16 years of prosperity?

What is the experience of Aba people with Geometric private power company? Does it further validate how private companies are best for the country, as opposed to APC progreThief palliative sharing, job killing government owned companies?

The migrant crisis in Libya and the Nigeria experience

JUNE 24, 2019

The drive for survival and for greener pastures has continued to force millions of West African young men and women to gamble with death in attempts to cross over to Europe and other parts of the world. This quest to escape poverty, hunger, unemployment and insecurity, among other reasons, caused a major segment of Nigeria’s population to seek alternatives for better livelihood prospects for themselves and their families.

Those seeking economic survival see irregular migration as the best alternative, given the difficulty and resources involved in migrating through regular and legitimate routes. In many instances, very few of the original number who set out on these dangerous journeys live to tell their stories. While many regularly drown in the Mediterranean Sea, many also die in the deserts, and others are sold as slaves in a modern slave market.

Most of the victims of this trade are from West Africa. Many of them leave home with expectations of getting to Europe and other destinations perceived to have better economic prospects for them, but they end up in the slave merchant nets in North Africa. The victims are put in camps and sold in open markets in Libya, while the international community watches in silence. The geographical location of Libya renders it a transit route for migrants journeying to Italy and many other parts of Europe.

Most of these countries listed manufacture the components needed for power generation and distribution. If they have any foreign technical input it won't be considerable.

You are a minority. And please don’t confuse working remotely with being skilled. There are lots of jobs Nigerians are now doing abroad or remotely simply because those roles have become too low level for the locals in those country for the pay. If Nigerians were truly that skilled and resources, foreigners wouldn’t be here taking low level jobs. The best bricklayers, carpenters, painters etc in Nigeria are not Nigerians.

That’s isn’t to say there aren’t skilled Nigerians, the are few and far between. I know.

Nigeria has far better painters, bricklayers, tilers than those neighboring countries. When I was building my second house they sweet-talked me into using the best hands from Togo which I did, 8 years after I am still spending money correcting many of their mistakes and bad jobs meanwhile my first house built by Nigerians are still intact 13 years after.

We have both skilled and unskilled labours, except you have been looking in the wrong places.
I have had contract with few companies owned by Lebanese and Chinese and all the works are done by Nigerians why the Chinese supervise.
