Mahama Recalls Ghana’s High Commissioner To Nigeria Over Alleged Vote Buying by Racoon(op): 12:28pm On Feb 09
Ghanaian President John Mahama has ordered the immediate recall of Mohammed Ahmed, known as Baba Jamal, from his position as the country’s high commissioner to Nigeria over allegations of vote buying in Saturday’s parliamentary primaries.

Mahama’s decision was in response to claims that delegates were induced during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries.

Jamal was a candidate in the polls, which he later won. During the election, Jamal’s campaign team offered 32-inch televisions and boiled eggs to delegates who took part in the primaries.

Jamal confirmed that television sets had been distributed but rejected claims that the act amounted to vote buying.

“So if you give television sets to people, what is wrong with it when you give things to people?” he asked, according to local media Joy Online. “Is this the first time I am giving things to people?”

Explaining the reason behind Jamal’s recall, Felix Ofosu, Mahama’s spokesperson, said that while the allegations of vote buying were made against multiple candidates who contested the primaries, Jamal was the only serving public officer among them.

“The President has also noted the public statement by the General Secretary of the NDC indicating that the Party has commenced its own investigations into the allegations arising from the primaries,” the statement reads.

“Without prejudice to the ongoing internal party processes, and strictly in view of the standards of conduct expected of public officers, the President considers it necessary to act decisively to preserve the integrity of public office and to avoid any perception of impropriety or conflict with the Government’s Code of Conduct for Political Appointees.”

Ofosu said the high commissioner’s recall takes effect immediately, and that directives had been issued to the minister for foreign affairs to take the necessary administrative steps.

I am highly impressed with this decision. The election of John Mahatma was one of the most credible Ghana has ever had. Hence this shining example.

Credible electoral processes give right to credible and trustworthy leaders who take right decisions without fear or favour with regards to party patronage. So these kinds of sound decisions are not unexpected.
Re: Mahama Recalls Ghana’s High Commissioner To Nigeria Over Alleged Vote Buying by Racoon(op): 12:33pm On Feb 09
Ghana just passed a strong message to Nigerian. Electoral processes must be devoid of credibility issues. So non-transparent outcome must be challenged and appropriate sanctions meted out.

Meanwhile back here in Nigeria, the vote buying goes on unchallenged, despicable persons are being given envoy/ ambassadorial positions because of political patronage and the Senate is fighting against credible elections in our polity.

Everything Nigeria is plagued with unfortunate leaders that aid fraudulent practices, vote buying, ballot snatching, take it and run away with it electioneering. This government is the worst that can ever be in the history of Nigeria. We MUST take this country back from those marauders in power. Omo!

Giving Television set to delegates is not Vote Buying...

Vote Buying is when dollars keeps flying around during party primaries

And then ask, when would Nigeria get to this level of integrity in governance?

It is so disheartening that we are still fighting to enshrine compulsory electronic voting in our political system. Normally this shouldn't be an issue at all.

It is quite unfortunately that we have a very poor political culture.

He must be a friend to our president who was also nonchalant about buying votes.

Only God knows when that one will send out ambassadors after almost three years running aimlessly with the power he fought for and garbbed.

We are not likely to get there anytime soon with the worse rogues of Oshiomole's Assembly of Past Criminals, APC in office.

chisomkachy:
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has withdrawn the alleged money laundering suit it filed at the Federal High Court against Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa.

Naija News understands that the anti-graft did not give any particular reason for its application for withdrawal.

Following the application to withdraw, Justice Nicholas Oweibo discharged the ‘lien/Post No Debit’ placed on Obasa’s three accounts in Standard Chartered Bank.

The accounts are (US Dollars) 0001852063; (Current) 0001852056 and (Saving) 5002309624.

The judge also set aside the ex-parte orders he made on September 15, 2020, which led to the freezing of the accounts.

Recall that the court on September 15, 2020, granted an interim order freezing Obasa’s accounts following the EFCC’s application in a suit marked FHC/LCS/1064/2020.

The agency had said it was investigating the Speaker for the alleged offences of conspiracy, diversion of funds, abuse of office and money laundering.

But Justice Oweibo, on August 16, 2023, heard the application to unfreeze the accounts in his chamber.

During the hearing, the EFCC was represented by Mr. Sulaiman I. Sulaiman, while Obasa was represented by Mr. Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).

The EFCC lawyer told the court that the application to unfreeze the accounts was pursuant to Section 44(2)(K) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Sections 26, 29 and 34 (1) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004, and under the court’s inherent jurisdiction.

Section 44 of the Constitution concerns constitutional rights to property.

Justice Oweibo held: “It is hereby ordered that an order is hereby granted to the respondent/applicant setting aside the ex-parte orders of this court made on the 15th day of September 2020 upon the ex-parte motion of the Applicant/ Respondent in relation the funds of the Respondent/Applicant domiciled in the accounts stated in the following schedule:

“ACCOUNT NAME, FINANCIAL ACCOUNT INSTITUTIONS, TYPE OF ACCOUNT, 1. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered, (US Dollars) 0001852063 2. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Current) 0001852056 3. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Saving) 5002309624.

“Issued at Lagos, under the seal of this Honourable Court and by the hands of the Presiding Judge this 16th day of August 2023.”
