A yet-to-be identified husband has lost his life in an accident which occurred on the Lekki-Epe expressway in Lagos.

The wife, who was seated next to her husband survived but sustained injuries in the accident which occurred on Thursday morning.

The accident involved a truck conveying granite and a Toyota car.

According to eyewitnesses, the truck which was heading towards Lekki from Epe, lost control as a result of brake failure and crashed into the Toyota.

The husband was pronounced dead at the scene.

His wife, who had life threatening injuries, was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed the incident, saying that the accident occurred on Thursday morning at EKEKO Junction along the Lekki–Ajah Expressway.

Bakare-Oki disclosed that the accident claimed the life of a male motorist and left his spouse critically injured.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that an articulated truck, heavily ladened with granite and travelling at a very high speed from the Epe axis, was approaching Eleko Junction when it reportedly experienced a brake malfunction. The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing the truck to veer off its track and collide forcefully with a Toyota saloon car travelling from Ajah inward Epe.

“The impact resulted in the truck toppling over the Toyota, crushing it beneath its weight. The Toyota saloon car became entrapped under the truck. It took the timely intervention of LASTMA personnel and officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in collaboration with public-spirited bystanders, to extricate the victims from the debris. Tragically, the driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, seated in the front passenger position, sustained life-threatening injuries and was immediately rescued for urgent medical attention” he said.

He explained further that the remains of the deceased and his critically injured spouse were evacuated from the accident scene by an ambulance service deployed by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for requisite medical and mortuary procedures.

Trucks that have been on the roads for over 20 years with rusted patchedup parts needs to be banned on the roads. To worsen it, they are being driven by illiterate irresponsible drivers. Such a sad story. May the soul of the man rest in peace.

Truck will keep killing people as long as bad leaders still own the businesses the trucks are servicing. The average truck driver is not as trained as that private car owner

See let me tell you. The high speed of a thing maybe exaggerated just to paint the driver as bad. Ordinary 40 speed can get fatal when it concerns brake failure, the vehicle will continue moving and it will be as if the speed is increasing more and more.
I'm not trying to exonerate the driver just explaining things

It’s not illiteracy , it’s not dumb driving it is the result of Alcohol and possibly drugs

Road safety will be busy looking for sharp looking cars to harass while ignore trucks and buses that actually have high hazard risks . No checks at parks for inebriation amongs drivers even alcohol is openly sold at parks

We are not ready as a state or country at large

....truck heavily laden with granite ...... who removed the granite from the truck and street? Brake failure seems to be the reason for almost all accidents. Is there ever an investigation to find out if this is so?...and what is the authorities doing to prevent this? ... can't they set up check points to do basic checks? ...brakes ..lights ...tyres ...driver not under the influence? What is hard in doing this ...when this can make money through fines?...killing two birds with one stone?

My friend the report says brake failure, if true then nothing concerns alcohol and drugs inside. Brake failure can happen to anybody just that most drivers don't always take note when their brake pads are going down, or sometimes knows but tries to risk it.

In sane clime speed limit in densely populated areas is between 40 to 50 km per hour. In Nigeria, it is drive as you wish. No STOP sign, no Yield sign at round about, no speed limit enforcement.
Yet, we claim Lagos is a mega shifty.
