You see eh! PSquare was never them Wizkid and co mates nor their generation.
PSquare when they peak was in the big 3 alongside Dbanj and Tuface.
Noticed this 3 are still singing till now but they have make way for the current big 3.
.
Then for the current ones who are supposed to have vie for the position of the big 3 with Wizkid, Davido and Burna. They just felt within themselves that there's nothing they can do to surpass those 3. And fans too didn't help matters by constantly drumming it to whoever cares to listen that it's those 3 or none.
Wizkid hasn't done anything meaningful music wise in the last few years but that already made fame and fanbase will always push him to be there.
Just like in the Fuji genre, no matter what you sing, you can't surpass the big 3 of KWAM 1, Pasuma and Osupa in the eyes of music fans.

I once heard someone said if KWAM 1 likes just record kpangolo, he will still buy the album.
Now back to the main big 3, these 2 people ought to have contested with them, Olamide and Kizz. But they're like Eden Hazard and Neymar who had the potential to challenge Messi and Ronaldo but were too comfortable in their comfort zone and felt there's nothing they can do to surpass those two.
And when they eventually had the balls to go the extra mile and challenge them, injuries came and destroy everything.
This is the case of Olamide and Kizz in my own opinion.
And without mincing words, my current best Naija artist is Kizz Daniel.
I have almost all his tracks which are singable on my phone.
In contrast to Wizkid who I have only his "holla at your boy" song on my phone

You are highly carried cos those were the hottest three and later the second set you mentioned came but burna just dislodge olamide. Rema is giving the new set big three serious competition and he may just replace any of them. Asake is fast rising and currently I will place him in top five after rema in fourth. the current top three has really mastered their craft and it will take constitency from other artist to displace them. They command huge fan base. olamide mostly singing in dialect has negatively impacted on global recognition. His collabo with Asake brought his first ever nomination on Grammy award. currently Asake is bigger than him internationally. Africa wise, he is a king anyway.

I don't think psquare should be on the list. They were already at their peak and the game had changed or was changing at the time. They still had a year or two left at the peak but they finished their promise at that time and couldn't have gotten bigger.

If Michael Jackson was alive today and released a track he would never surpass his old records. He couldn't possibly get bigger because the game changed a long time ago.


Olamide too I also disagree. They is just a limit you can't push over no matter how hard you try. He took could have remained in the game for longer...he is still in the game though but nothing more promising about that. They is nothing unexpected he could have achieved.


Ice prince yes I agree with you. He left too suddenly when fans were expecting much more from him. Promising yes even though I wasn't a fan of his from his first single/album.



I'd add tekno to the list. He took had promise and could have gotten bigger but his career was cut short by the problem he had with his voice.


Some one mentioned kizz Daniel and I agree to an extent. He doesn't push his music and seems comfortable where he is. He is in his comfort zone and doesn't look like he wants to get bigger!

Its not about being among the big 3 or whatever you call them but you see RunTown, that guy would have been so great but his shortsightedness cost him a lot. He fought his managers, he wanted to manage everything, from the creative side to the business side of making music. You cant control all, one side has to give in. I pray same predicament doesn't befall Asake.

As for PSqure, they are still great even as they have separated. They still get shows, release new songs and they still have the "wow" effect. Though not as they were in the early stages of their career. And when you cross check them with their peers who started out with them during the same period, the likes of Edris Abdulkarim, African China, Sample Ekwe, Baba Frayo, Zulu Kerewa, then you will understand what I mean.

I’ve stopped listening to the so called afrobeats as it’s all starting to sound like the same old cacophony of noise with all these recent artists….including the big three you guys are fawning over!

The last time i had interest in afrobeats was when Davidos’ FALL, FIRE-FIRE-BURN (i know that’s not the name of the song but his fans will know the song I’m referring to), and IF were topping the charts. As well as Runtowns MAD OVER YOU; Teknos early songs; like PANA and DURO; P-Squares early songs like NO ONE BE LIKE YOU, etc; Burnaboys ANGELINA and DANGOTE; and the artist that sang that funny song PULL OVER with Wizkid (his name escapes me at the moment)! Now it seems recent afrobeat artists are being driven by ego, hype and an obsessed fan base! It seems to be that it’s no more about the music and everything about wanting to be seen as ‘the biggest out of Africa’!

For some artist, they do not want it all.

Olamide is that kind of guy. Davido and Wizkid put in a lot to make themselves known. For Burnaboy, his music was enough to put him wherw he is today.

Olamide is now a family man, probably the most responsible amongst them.

They focused on music, their craft, winning, and not beefing. They dominated the scene for over a decade. Plus, they were always thinking of how to make Afrobeats international (this showed in their strategic collaborations and who they rolled with. This paved the way for the 'New Cats').
They had the consistency and stronger work rate, which are ingredients these other 'could-have-beens' didn't have.

Even Davido had to acknowledge the Big 3 that was there before the New Generation Big 3, in one of his songs - ''All of You"

You're right. But, that doesn't mean all those who broke through, to catch the attention of the powers-that-be did 'baby oil' stuff.

As for that 'skinny one'... Some big powers have made her a pet project, but I don't think she really has what they need.
When they are done with her, they'd drop her like hot potato - it's a matter of time.
