Atiku Criticizes 2027 Election Timing by iwaeda(op): 11:19pm On Feb 13
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has raised doubts about the capability of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct proper elections, saying, “something as basic as choosing a broadly acceptable date should not be mishandled”.

He asked INEC to reconsider the February 20, 2027, and March 6, 2027 election dates because they fall within Ramadan, a sacred season of fasting, reflection, and spiritual devotion for millions of Nigerian Muslims.

In a post on his Facebook page, the Presidential hopeful and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, said if the issue of timing is not well handled by INEC, “what assurance do we have that it will competently deliver free, fair, and credible elections in 2027”.

Atiku said, “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) must urgently reconsider the February 20, 2027 date it has announced for the general elections. That date falls squarely within the Ramadan period (February 7 – March 8, 2027), a sacred season of fasting, reflection, and spiritual devotion for millions of Nigerian Muslims.

“Elections are not mere administrative rituals; they are national exercises that demand maximum participation, physical endurance, and collective focus.

“Fixing such a critical civic exercise in the middle of a major religious observance reflects poor judgment and a troubling lack of sensitivity to the nation’s socio-religious realities.

“In a diverse country like Nigeria, inclusive planning is not optional, it is fundamental. Something as basic as choosing a broadly acceptable date should not be mishandled. It speaks to competence, foresight, and respect for citizens.

“If INEC struggles with getting a simple matter of timing right, Nigerians are justified in asking: what assurance do we have that it will competently deliver free, fair, and credible elections in 2027?”

As we look toward 2027, what we need is vigilance, reform where necessary, technological improvement, proper training, and citizen engagement

Good enough, the current president is also a Muslim including the vice president. But wait o, Atiku self too like complain. If they shift the election to April now, he will still look for something to complain about.

There is one common and constant thing with failures; EXCUSES
Re: Atiku Criticizes 2027 Election Timing by Mumuismumu(m): 3:59am On Feb 14
Religion and religious extremism, one of the national malaise that must be uprooted if Nigeria must take a further leap into further success.

This Atiku guy is foolish. Already losing the election when the primary is yet to be conducted. Must he bring religion into everything? Does anyone care what religion he belong?

Atiku should let the election to be conducted during fasting peroid so that those who are planning to rig their way into power won't be able to do so because they only fear of God during that period.

Is there anything that can’t be criticized?

Take it to January 2027 or December 2026 and they will still complain

Why is Pa Atiku always finding fault in everything done in this country. I have not seen him applaud anything. Or maybe I have missed out at a point.
Well, it's normal for opposition to always criticize actions and inactions of the party in power.

Dey play! If Nigerian politicians had the fear of God in them, then Nigeria would be more prosperous than China.

They have already calculated ahead their religion activities timetable. It's part of why this country refuses to grow. Nothing will satisfy these people in this country.

Anyway,we have been Fasting and fasting since January and some since February,so we don't understand Atiku's attack on even the dates 🗓️ of Elections!
Is it that Everything About the Govt-you and the ADC ( Association of Deficient Comrades) Members will criticize, just to stroll - on The News and Social Media with gaulible audiences?
And yet,Many of these ADC ( PDP Sympathetisers and LP- Obedient have been in government before - FORMER' POLITICIANS - with No Impacts On The Youths and the.

Atiku was not able to join the Sheiks who has been calling for the removal of the INEC chairman so he doesn’t appear as religious intolerant.

This election date has now presented an opportunity to act like he’s standing with the muslims to call out the Christian INEC chairman over not picking dates that suit the muslims.

Election has always held in February & March to allow for the swearing in of May. When does Atiku suggest the election be held? January or April? Or both presidential and gubernatorial be held after March 6th.

Several Muslims try to keep the month of Ramadan holy, maybe this will help reduce rigging and vote buying/selling amongst our Muslim brethren.

He has a point. Election in Nigeria is physically draining for both the voters and umpires.

People line up in the sun for hours to vote and wait for the votes to be counted before going home. That requires a lot of strength and calories. A fasting person may not have such strength and may result in unfortunate circumstances.

They need to work on the timing.

The gubernatorial election also falls on a sallah day. Will that day be Easter as well or it doesn't matter? The INEC cannot be making such rookie mistake with such important dates. It suggests they didn't do their due diligence or it's deliberate. Either ways, it doesn't look good on them as far as competence is concerned. It only reinforces the claims of those that have accused the INEC chairman of bias.

You guys are just so blind to reality. It should be obvious to anyone who can reason logically that it is Atiku and his coalition partners in the north that intends to rig the election. That’s the major reason they don’t want it during Ramadan period. If APC is not complaining, why is Atiku complaining if not that he’s planning to rig.

That same February and March period fall in the time of Christians lenting period. Should Nigerians fold their hands because of Islamic timing? What of Christian timing? North and their stupid politics.

I think the timing is fine.
Both christains and Muslims are less expected to do anything stewpeed such as rigging, stealing ballot boxes, attacking innocent folks at units.
