“Not the First Time” — Man Raises Alarm After ₦1.1m Allegedly Disappears From His Account

A Nigerian man has raised concerns online after discovering that more than ₦1 million was allegedly deducted from his bank account without his authorization, sparking reactions across social media.

The individual, identified by his handle @leodey4u on X, claimed he only became aware of the transaction several days after it occurred when he logged into his mobile banking application. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

According to details shared in his post, a total sum of ₦1,185,691.07 was debited from his account on February 6, 2026, in what he described as an unexplained transaction linked to his account with Zenith Bank.

Expressing shock, he wrote that he had no prior knowledge of the deduction until nearly a week later.

“I just logged in to my Zenith Bank app only to see that I was debited 1 million+ six days ago for what I don’t know,” he said.

The situation drew further attention after the account holder alleged that this was not the first time he had experienced an unexplained debit. He claimed that in December 2025, a separate deduction of ₦6,701.83 was made from his account under unclear circumstances.

Frustrated by the development, he stated that he had decided to withdraw his remaining funds from the account.

“This is actually not the first time they’re tampering with my money… I don sha clear the account; they no fit see my penny again,” he added.

The post quickly gained traction online, with many Nigerians reacting with a mix of concern, humor, and advice.

Some users urged the complainant to immediately report the matter to the bank and relevant financial authorities, while others expressed surprise at the amount involved.

Incidents involving alleged unauthorized transactions have increasingly become topics of discussion on social media, with customers calling for improved security measures, faster dispute resolution processes, and clearer communication from financial institutions.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official public statement regarding the specific complaint.

Financial experts typically advise customers who notice suspicious transactions to promptly notify their bank, block compromised cards, and file formal complaints to aid investigation and potential recovery of funds.

It has happened to me twice, 283k the first time and 98k on another occasion. Fortunately, the bank was promptly reminded of its responsibilities, and my money found its way back within 24 hours on both instances. Since then, it appears the institution has chosen to spare itself further embarrassment.

I find it rather hard to believe that one bank can simply stroll into another bank’s domain and withdraw funds from a customer’s account in the name of loan recovery. Are these not the same institutions that won’t even let you ask a harmless question about your own spouse’s account, yet are now expected to roll out the red carpet for an entirely different bank and permit a withdrawal?

It's CBN directive, those that took the loan signed off a lien against their BVN, since the debt repayment is due and no voluntary payment effort from the debtor, they go for your account(s)

So, what's stopping him from going to the bank for clarity rather than coming online first. I don't think anyone can easily let go of a million like that, without trying to recover the money.

Re: Man Raises Alarm After ₦1.1 Million Disappears From His Zenith Bank Account by aieromon(m):
All beneficiaries were required to accept a digital offer letter prior to disbursement. This offer letter clearly stated the loan terms and conditions, including repayment obligations and the use of the Global Standing Instruction (GSI) mechanism in the event of default. Beneficiaries can access their individual offer letters by visiting https://covid19.nmfb.com.ng/ and inputting their BVN.

“Regarding recoveries across multiple accounts, kindly note that the GSI framework, approved by the Central Bank of Nigeria, permits recovery from accounts linked to a borrower’s BVN in cases of default. Variations in recovery patterns (whether staggered or lump-sum deductions) are dependent on available balances across linked accounts at the time of recovery, and not based on preferential treatment.

“With respect to beneficiaries who may have believed the facility to be a grant, NIRSAL Microfinance Bank reiterates that it cannot be held responsible for misinformation or misrepresentation by third parties through whom some individuals may have accessed or received information about the loan. The Bank’s official documentation and channels consistently defined the intervention as a loan.

Under the GSI, it will no more be possible for a bank customer to take a loan or credit from one bank and refuse to pay back, while continuing to maintain several other accounts in other banks with enough credit balance that could have paid back the debt of the first bank.

For instance, with the new policy, if a bank customer or account holder is granted a loan or credit by a bank (say GTB), and defaults in paying back when the facility becomes due in line with the agreed GSI repayment mandate, GTB can contact any other bank(s) in the country where the defaulting customer holds an account(s) with credit balance that is enough to offset the full value of the loan or credit and recover the loan or credit from there.

For instance, if a customer takes a loan or credit from GTB and defaults in repaying according to agreed repayment schedule, GTB can contact Zenith Bank, Access Bank and First Bank, if the customer has accounts with sufficient credit balances in those banks, and the accounts are linked by his or her bank verification number (BVN), to recover the full value of the loan or credit without any further recourse to the defaulting customer.

Baba took loan and don't want to pay back. Nigerians are very terrible people to lend money.
I remember lending someone 80k. The guy refused to pay, I just left the money for him.

If you don't pay back the loan, how will the government continue the policy to help others who genuinely need the loan for business and education.

Nigerians should learn to payback borrowed money

Hasn't this been dispelled as possibly fake?

Even on that thread, someone recreated same thing with about #5m

What people can do for attention and perhaps X money. The mentioned bank should see this to the end if it eventually happens to be fake.

Guy man think say he fit take loan from one account and quickly transfer all his money to another account to avoid paying back the loan. That is the reason Nigerians were forced to have BVN numbers. You can run but you can't hide.

Na covid 19 loan Buhari gave, is what he was debited for.

GSI means Global Standing Instruction, when activated will debit any of your account with money inside linked to your BVN, it means you refused paying the loan for a long period and reason they activated it

Why would a customer money disappear from his accounthuh
I thought it's the bank duty to give you notice before withdrawal from your account

That's betrayal from the bank
Re: Man Raises Alarm After ₦1.1 Million Disappears From His Zenith Bank Account by Greattha:
The narration says. GSIRecovery...which is Global Standing Instruction Recovery...he def took or guaranteed a loan from NIRSAL MFB and they're recovering it.

It's only a crime if he didn't sign the GSI.

Banks don't execute GSI unless they've exhausted other recovery means plus I think a court order is also required.
