Reps To Hold Emergency Session Over INEC’s 2027 Election Timetable by Omooba77(op): 10:39am On Feb 14
The House of Representatives will reconvene on Tuesday, February 17, for an emergency sitting to deliberate on electoral matters arising from the recently announced timetable for the 2027 General Elections.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Joash Amupitan, had on Friday announced February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections, and March 6, 2027, for governorship and state House of Assembly polls.

Addressing political parties, civil society organisations and journalists at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, Amupitan said the action was in line with constitutional provisions and Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandates INEC to publish the notice not later than 360 days before the election.

The decision on the emergency sitting was conveyed to lawmakers through an internal memorandum issued by the Office of the Speaker late on Friday, underscoring the constitutional importance of the development and the need for urgent legislative attention.

The development was confirmed in a statement signed by Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., Spokesman of the House of Representatives

According to the memo, the emergency session reflects the resolve of the House of Representatives to respond promptly to issues with far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s democratic process.

Deliberations during the sitting are expected to focus on legislative matters connected to the INEC announcement, in line with the constitutional responsibilities of the National Assembly.

All legislative business relating to the issue, the memo noted, will be treated expeditiously, while members have been strongly advised to prioritise attendance given the significance of the matters under consideration.

The House reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions through responsive and responsible lawmaking and acting in the best interest of citizens.

In the same vein, in a statement signed by the Chief of Staff to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Prof Jake Dan-Azumi, explained that the emergency sitting was to allow lawmakers to rescind its earlier decision on the Electoral Amendment Bill, particularly, to address issue of timeline for publication of the notice of elections by INEC.

"This follows the release earlier today by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the 2027 General Election Timetable.

“As has been observed, the proposed dates for the Presidential and National Assembly elections coincide with the period of Ramadan, a development likely to affect participation.

“Accordingly, it has become necessary to undertake a recision and recommittal of the Electoral Act (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill earlier passed by the House. Among other matters, the recommittal is intended to review and adjust the statutory notice period for elections by INEC from 360 days to 300 days, in order to ensure greater flexibility in the scheduling of elections and alignment with prevailing national considerations.

“All legislative processes relating to the Bill are expected to be concluded the same day to enable Members proceed with other scheduled political engagements, including the forthcoming APC Ward Congresses.

“Given the constitutional and national importance of this matter, all Honourable Members are strongly advised to prioritise attendance”
, the statement said.

If they like, they should move it to May 29, it still won’t matter because Tinubu will be re-elected, so there won’t be a need for government transfer and other headaches.

I hoped those protesting against none mandatory e-transmission results will be bold enough to protest against the change in dates because religion is personal and it will be a bad precedent to allow religion to dictate National governance!

Time table coincides with Ramadan. That's all.
When nations are planning residential homes in the moon, Nigeria talks about religion and Islam.
But ask the sharia religious people to go get their Islamic Republic, they will refuse. Cheap cash from crude oil and gas deposits in the Niger delta region cannot allow them get their whole Islamic Republic whose boundaries they tactfully drew through their adoption of unconstitutional Islamic sharia criminal justice system beginning 1999.

Just know that presidential election and governorship will hold in October - November.
If they remove it from February - March because of fasting, they can't put it in March - April or April - May because of swearing in and litigations.
The news of October - November 2026 elections has been in the news since mid last year. I think it is no longer rumor, it is getting closer to being true and that may put the opposition on disarray as the APC already knows who they are fielding for elections but the oppositions are yet to put their house in order.

In 2003, the general elections coincided with Holy Saturday, a day before Easter and Catholic Bishops protested. The elections were eventually shifted to April. No Muslim raised any concern or counter-protest.

Not only will this new date in 2027 coincide with Ramadan, the gubernatorial election will also fall on a Sallah day.

This is not a parallel argument assuming without conceding that it is true

At any rate it is not only Christians and Muslims in Nigeria

Holy Saturday whatever that means is a single day

Ramadan is a whole month

It is not unreasonable for Muslims to ask for accommodation for a special day but a whole month is going too far for any religion

In this case the fasting period for Christians and Muslims in 2027 coincide and run from February 10 to March 25

The country does not use a lunar calendar and we cannot use two calendars

So should we postpone WAEC and all other exams anytime they fall in Ramadan?

That is a backdoor way of introducing Islamic calendar

I think this is going too far and is another nail in the coffin of staying together as one country

We won't accept Islamic calendar through the back door
Next thing they will say Friday should be work free

This is what happens when you follow other peoples religion blindly

No, **elections are not prohibited during Ramadan** in Islam.

### Why?

Ramadan is a month of fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection observed by Muslims worldwide. Islamic teachings require fasting from dawn to sunset but **do not prohibit civic duties** such as voting, holding elections, governance, or public administration.

### In Practice

Many Muslim-majority countries have held elections during Ramadan. For example:

* Egypt has conducted parliamentary and presidential voting phases during Ramadan.
* Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, has also held election activities overlapping with Ramadan.
* Pakistan has not treated Ramadan as a constitutional barrier to elections.

Sometimes governments may adjust:

* Voting hours (e.g., evening voting after iftar)
* Campaign activities (to respect religious sensitivities)

But this is administrative — **not a religious prohibition**.

If you're asking about a specific country or situation, I can explain that context as well.

The Muslims had set bad precedent then, hence the Bishop demands moreover 2003 isn’t 2026,now!
