For many women with fuller busts, finding well-fitting plus-size bras remains a challenge, often resulting in discomfort and forcing them to cope with chronic back and shoulder pain, poor posture, and long-term musculoskeletal issues that interfere with daily activities and overall quality of life. Yet many lingerie brands continue to offer limited or poorly designed options, prioritising aesthetics over function. CHIJIOKE IREMEKA explores the urgent need for inclusive, supportive, and body-conscious designs that safeguard health while celebrating natural curves

For Comfort Agiri, getting dressed is never just about picking an outfit; it begins with a daily negotiation between comfort, support, and what’s available on store shelves.

“The fashion industry doesn’t allow us to enjoy our big boobs the way we’d like. Wearing the wrong bra causes back pain and discomfort. I find myself slouching or constantly adjusting, which adds tension to my neck and shoulders,”3 she said.

Bras in larger sizes also carry higher price tags, further complicating access.

“It’s frustrating. You struggle to find options, and when you finally do, they’re expensive, or sometimes only available in second-hand,” she lamented.

For Agiri, the issue goes beyond personal inconvenience. It’s about representation, choice, and practical support.

“There’s a real need for more variety in larger sizes: supportive, stylish, and affordable bras that complement the beauty of busty women,” she said.

Despite the challenges, Agiri has come to confidently embrace her body and curves.

Pain amplified by menstrual cycle

Abimbola Olusola, 28, a National Youth Service Corps member with a triple D bust, explained how wearing the wrong bra worsens her pain during ovulation and menstruation.

“During these periods, my boobs become fuller, heavier, and more sensitive. Any pressure from the wrong bra amplifies the pain, as it can even feel like it’s reaching my head,” she said.

Olusola also noted that certain movements, including intimate activity with her fiancé, can trigger discomfort if her breasts are unsupported.

“The pain is bearable. Many people don’t understand the daily struggle women with big boobs face,” the corps member added.

The challenge of buying the right size

Both women emphasised the importance of buying bras from a trusted supplier who understands size and preferences to ensure the right fit.

“If I buy from elsewhere, it’s often a gamble. A poor fit affects my posture and causes shoulder pain. The straps dig in, and the support is gone,” Agiri said.

The financial burden is also heavy.

“A small-cup bra may cost around N4,000, but a larger size can sell for N9,000 or more. It’s frustrating; it’s not our fault we have big boobs, yet we pay more for this necessity,” Olusola said.

“Bra makers should produce designs that cater to every body type. It’s not just about fashion, it’s about health, comfort, and dignity,” Agiri said.

Despite the challenges, both women celebrate their bodies.

Olusola said, “I love my boobs. Sometimes I wish they were smaller for convenience, but I appreciate their beauty. The challenge is dealing with attention and comments, which can be annoying or even condescending at times.

“Someone, sometime ago, collided with me because he was looking at my boobs and got carried away. That’s just it, basically,” one woman lamented, highlighting the unintended attention that comes with having a fuller bust.

For many women, their breasts are big and beautiful—but the support they require is often neglected.

Bras are designed to lift and support, yet wearing the wrong size can do the opposite, chiropractors warn.

Chiropractors, licensed healthcare professionals specialising in musculoskeletal and nervous system disorders, stress that poorly fitted bras can aggravate neck, shoulder, and back pain.

Studies suggest that 80 per cent of women wear the wrong bra size: 70 per cent too small, and 10 per cent too large.

The consequences include skin abrasions, poor posture, premature sagging, and chronic musculoskeletal discomfort.

A chiropractor at Worcester Chiropractic Clinic, UK, Dr David Cooper, on the hospital’s website, explains that women with large breasts, medically referred to as macromastia, often experience symmetrical pain in the neck, shoulders, and upper and lower back.

“Pain can be aching, burning, dull, or sharp. It moves around, affecting different areas on different days. Factors such as activity, stress, and sleep can influence the intensity,” he said.

An anatomist, Dr Bridget Okorie, emphasises the importance of proper sizing.

“An ill-fitting bra can make you uncomfortable and embarrassed. Breasts may spill out, straps may dig in or slide off, and underwire bras can rub against the rib cage, causing pain. While it doesn’t cause permanent damage, the discomfort is real, and it can indirectly contribute to back pain,” she said.

Even celebrities are not immune.

Nollywood actress Cossy Ojiako once admitted the embarrassment of her breasts popping out of her bra in public, which is one among the many cautionary tales about the consequences of wearing the wrong size.

Shopping starts with hope, ends in frustration

Salome Irikheghe, finding bras that support her 48B bust is a daily battle.

“Every shopping trip starts with hope and ends in frustration. I often settle for used bras because new ones rarely fit. The industry isn’t making enough sizes that truly care for women like us,” she said.

Even when her size is available, the challenges continue. Straps may be too tight, too thin, or fail to support her chest; cups may fit poorly.

Prices for larger sizes are often shockingly high, between N9,000 and N15,000, turning a basic necessity into a luxury.

Yet she perseveres, knowing that the alternative is lingering chest and back pain.

By evening, her shoulders ache, her chest feels heavy, and relief is all she seeks.

“Physical discomfort is exhausting, but the emotional toll matters too. Busty women feel overlooked because most bras aren’t designed with our bodies in mind,” she said.

Pillow of comfort

Despite the attention her bust may attract, Irikheghe notes the irony.

She said, “Men like boobs, but male tailors are not presenting us with bras that cater to our needs. They love big boobs, and some even joke about using them as pillows, but we still struggle to find affordable, supportive options.”

She appeals to the lingerie industry to create designs that prioritise the health and comfort of plus size women.

“We need bigger bra sizes with proper straps, strong support, and thoughtful designs. Loving our boobs shouldn’t come with constant chest pain. We deserve better, and it’s time the industry listens,” Irikheghe added.

Her story reflects the reality for many Nigerian women. While large breasts may be admired, the daily physical and emotional challenges of inadequate support remain largely invisible.

Ordering relief from afar

For Abuja-based Glory Alozie, finding a bra that lifts her 50B bust while providing comfort is a frustrating and costly endeavour.

She often relies on a friend in Lagos, who wears a similar size, to search for a suitable bra and even source extra straps in case the fit isn’t perfect.

“Most times, I have to call my friend in Lagos to buy a bra and courier it to me. Lagos is better than Abuja because many imports come through there,” Alozie said.

She spends at least N10,000 on each bra, with courier costs reaching as high as N8,000 or N9,000.

“Breasts are naturally heavy, and when they aren’t properly supported, it can worsen back and chest pain. If they’re not packed well, it affects posture, confidence, and daily movement,” she added.

According to Philip Okonkwo, a tailor and CEO of Coserns Stitches in Aba, the scarcity of plus-size bras is partly a numbers game.

“Large-bust women are fewer, and making big bras requires more materials than standard sizes. Sometimes, the material for one large bra could make two or three smaller ones. Production costs are higher, and sales are slower, which explains the higher price,” he said.

Okonkwo also highlighted durability challenges, explaining that triple DDD or ZZZ size breasts exert more pressure on the bra, causing threads to loosen faster.

“We are constantly learning how to produce larger sizes that are both durable and supportive,” he added.

The physical toll of large breasts is well-documented. An Osteopath and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Abia State State University Teaching Hospital, Dr Isaiah Abali, explained that extra weight at the front of the body forces the muscles in the back to work harder to maintain posture.

He said that over time, this leads to fatigue, stiffness, and pain in the neck, shoulders, and back.

Studies also indicate that women with larger breasts often develop a slightly forward-leaning posture at the base of the neck, which can further aggravate discomfort.

Ill-fitting bras only compound these issues, making proper sizing and supportive designs crucial.

Experts recommend finding the right bra as the first line of relief. Adjustments to posture, seating arrangements, walking habits, and core-strengthening exercises can also reduce pain and improve comfort.

For some women, surgical options provide a more permanent solution. Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty, removes excess fat, tissue, and skin to create smaller, more symmetrical breasts that are natural-looking and proportionate to the body.

The procedure typically takes two to three hours under general anaesthesia and can be combined with a breast uplift, known as mastopexy, to correct sagging.

A Consultant Gynaecologist and Surgeon at Federal Medical Centre, Epe, Lagos, Dr Cynthia Okafor, confirmed that large breasts affect posture and spinal alignment, causing pain during exercise, daily activities, and even while sitting or driving.

“Women who undergo reduction surgery often report significant relief, improved posture, and increased energy throughout the day,” she said.

The surgeon emphasised that supportive, properly fitted bras can reduce strain on the spine and, when combined with exercise, strengthen the back, shoulders, and core, helping women to manage discomfort.

Okafor further said that maintaining a healthy weight, applying warm compresses, and seeking professional fitting advice or medical guidance could help protect against long-term musculoskeletal complications.

Carrying watermelon-sized bursts is not a cosmetic aura but a health challenge. Strangly, many ladies like it for sheer sake of being big breasted

Almost all bras in the market are foreign made. Why can't you women start sewing bras to your taste with local Nigerian fabrics? After all most tailors in Nigeria are even female. See what the guys have done with boxers, even in this Tinubu regime you can still get some good quality boxers for as low as less than 5k.

The disadvantages of huge boobs are actually more than the advantages, if any.

You get unnecessary and mostly unwanted lewd male attention. What else?

Also a big breasted lady in a good relationship shouldn’t want such attention

Huge boobs give back pain, shoulder pain and sick jokes from perverts and unserious people.

For many men, they also want big boobs from afar. Once they’ve seen it unclothed, the attraction is over.
