A seating dispute at a church service held in honour of the late Mrs Lucia Onabanjo, Ogun State's first civilian First Lady, has triggered political ripples in Ogun State, drawing attention to questions of protocol, hierarchy and respect among present and former public office holders.

The incident reportedly occurred during the burial service when the Secretary to the Ogun State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, occupied a front-row seat said to have been reserved for former governor Ibikunle Amosun and his wife.

According to accounts from attendees, Amosun later pointed out that the seat had been designated for his spouse and requested that Talabi vacate it. 

Talabi allegedly declined, setting off a tense moment at what had otherwise been a solemn gathering of political leaders, dignitaries and family members paying their final respects.

While the exchange lasted only a short time, it has since generated debate within political circles and among observers of Ogun’s public affairs.

Officials familiar with the event say the seating arrangement had been structured in advance. The front row, they explained, was reserved for serving principal officers of government, including the deputy governor, the speaker of the house of assembly and the secretary to the state government. 

Former governors, senators and other senior dignitaries were assigned seats directly behind that row.

Supporters of that arrangement say it followed standard protocol and was intended to preserve order at a high-profile event attended by multiple categories of dignitaries.

However, other attendees maintain that seat tags bearing Amosun’s name and that of his spouse were visibly placed in the disputed area, raising questions about whether the final arrangement reflected what had originally been communicated.

The conflicting accounts have fuelled differing interpretations of what transpired, whether it was a misunderstanding over protocol or a moment that reflected deeper sensitivities about recognition and status in public life.

Political watchers say such ceremonies often involve delicate balancing between official hierarchy and respect for former leaders who once held electoral mandates.

In settings of mourning, they note, gestures of accommodation can carry symbolic importance beyond administrative order.

The development has also renewed public discussion about the role and influence of the secretary to the state government within the administration of Dapo Abiodun. 

Talabi is widely seen as a central coordinating figure in government, and the incident has added to ongoing conversations about how authority is perceived and exercised within the state’s political structure.

Neither side has issued a formal statement directly addressing the reported exchange. But the episode has continued to generate quiet commentary among political stakeholders, with some suggesting the situation might have been avoided through clearer communication or more flexible handling at the venue.

For many observers, the dispute underscores how ceremonial protocol can become politically sensitive, particularly when it involves past and present office holders sharing the same public space.

What began as a moment of remembrance for a former first lady has now evolved into a broader conversation about institutional respect, political culture and the management of public symbolism in Ogun State.

In deference, supporters of Dapo Abiodun and the Ogun State Government resorted to blame Former Governor and Ogun East Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel for the event that happened.

Fair enough. In 2027, every region will vote for "their people." Tinubu is still not loved in the Southsouth. He didn't win the region in 2023. He only "won" Rivers state and we all know how. Fastforward to 2027 and Rivers is still embroiled in crisis and so not still sure. He has also only made only few in-roads in the Northcentral. The Northcentral will always be split evenly anyways. He still won't win the Southwest in a landslide. No candidate ever does. In 2023, the North gave him his bloc vote that made him president. If he does not replicate this number or surpass it in the North, then he will not win.
