Can it be handover to me for just an hour?

This concept is one of the most senseless I've ever seen. The girl has no real powers and will just move around doing sight-seeing.

It would make better sense to make her your assistant for a day and show her how your typical day is spent as a governor.

And they had to make her wear Tinubu's cap?
What happens to a cap that would symbolize intellect or leadership?
So much for forcing this failed ideology down the throat of people at the slightest chance.
Anyways, "Etiyemonu" translates to what please?
No oo. Na Peter Obi cap and black dress them suppose wear her. Nonsense

People initiate things all the time and it doesn't mean their personal symbols must be attached to it.
It's supposed to be governor of "lagos state" and the occupier should wear something with the insignia of lagos state if necessary.
Or maybe something to promote the spelling bee that led her to the seat.
Even Sanwo Olu isn’t wearing Tinubu's cap.
I see it as just a mark of honour!

It was not Tinubu that ask them to retain it but you have to understand politics. If it was retained by Fashola, is it his successors that will now change it?

It happens everywhere in the world.

Today, some flags and coats of some institutions and agencies in Nigeria stlll bear Hausa and Arabic words. Why have they not been changed? It is simply because it may raise some political discussions which no government will want to dabble into because of its sensitivity.

Why putting tinubu cap on her head? It should have been done to encourage others but no, they decide to politicize it

25 YEARS OF POSSIBILITY - The Lagos State One-Day Governor Initiative

A Commemorative Silver Jubilee Edition (2001–2026)
There are few traditions in public life that endure not because they are politically convenient, but because they are deeply meaningful.
For 25 years, Lagos State has done something quietly radical: it has placed its highest symbolic office in the hands of a teenager — not for lineage, not for influence, but for intellect. This celebrates the Lagos State One-Day Governor initiative — a programme that has elevated literacy into leadership and turned vocabulary into vision.

ORIGINS: A VISION BORN IN 2001
The initiative began in 2001 under the leadership of Oluremi Tinubu, through the platform of the New Era Foundation. Its founding objectives were clear:
- Revive reading culture in Lagos public secondary schools
- Reward academic excellence publicly
- Encourage healthy intellectual competition
- Expose students to governance early

What distinguished the programme was its bold conclusion: the winner of the Lagos State Spelling Bee would become Governor for one day. In 2015, the initiative was formally institutionalised under the Lagos State Ministry of Education, ensuring continuity across administrations.
The idea has since evolved into one of the state’s most enduring educational traditions.

THE JOURNEY TO LAGOS HOUSE
The path to the Governor’s seat is rigorous:
- Local Government elimination rounds
- District championships
- State-wide grand finale

Contestants spell complex words before panels and audiences. Words such as:
- Myrmidon
- Ichthyology
- Chaetognatha

Victory demands composure, discipline, and linguistic precision. The winner becomes One-Day Governor while top finalists form a symbolic cabinet. For one day, governance becomes accessible.

HONOUR ROLL: 25 YEARS OF ONE-DAY GOVERNORS
2001 Ebuka Anisiobi Maryland Comprehensive High School
2002 Ovwuwhore Etiti Lagos State Model College, Badore

2026 Esther Etiyemonu Lagos State Senior Model College, Igbokuta
Note: Some years have limited archived reporting, though the competition has continued annually.

FEATURE PROFILES: LEADERS IN THE MAKING

JEMIMAH MARCUS (2020 Champion One-Day Governor 2021)
School: Angus Memorial Senior High School
Winning word: Myrmidon
At 16, Jemimah demonstrated composure under pressure that belied her age. She pledged her cash prize to her parents and declared ambitions to study medicine and specialise in neurosurgery.
During her one-day tenure, she presided over executive council proceedings and advocated improvements in educational infrastructure.
Legacy Impact:
Confidence forged in competition translated into civic presence.

ABDULAZEEZ ABDULRAHMON (2022 Champion)
School: Oriwu Senior Model College
Winning word: Chaetognatha
His victory came with:
- ₦300,000 cash prize
- Scholarship to a Lagos public university
- Educational trip to Finland
- He credited disciplined preparation and teacher mentorship.
Legacy Impact:
Demonstrated the global potential of Lagos public school excellence.

GLORIA AJALA (2018 Champion)
School: Lafiaji Senior High School
Gloria’s win resonated widely. Celebrated as a symbol of academic resilience, she earned a scholarship and statewide recognition.
Legacy Impact:
Reinforced that brilliance thrives regardless of background.

OLUFEMI OLASEINDE (2016 Champion)
School: Shasha Community Senior High
Winning word: Ichthyology
An aspiring aeronautic engineer, Olufemi embodied intellectual range — combining scientific curiosity with linguistic mastery.
Legacy Impact:
Proved language excellence supports STEM ambition.

ZOFFUN BUKOLA (2017 Champion)
School: Awodi Ora Secondary School
Zoffun used her platform to advocate girl-child education and expressed aspirations in law.
Legacy Impact:
Connected literacy to civic advocacy.

ESTHER ETIYEMONU (2026 Champion)
School: Lagos State Senior Model College, Igbokuta
At 14, Esther presided over executive proceedings and publicly praised reforms in education and infrastructure under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Legacy Impact:
Embodied the confidence and poise the initiative aims to cultivate.

THE SILENT IMPACT: BEYOND THE DAY
Over 25 years, education officials have consistently observed that many past winners:
- Proceed into tertiary education
- Pursue careers in medicine, engineering, law, and business
- Demonstrate elevated confidence and leadership presence

The psychological shift is perhaps the programme’s greatest gift - a teenager who presides over a state executive meeting rarely limits their future ambitions.

WHAT MAKES THE INITIATIVE ENDURE?
Meritocracy
Victory is earned solely through performance.

Symbolism with Substance
The experience is ceremonial — but transformative.

Public School Empowerment
It affirms the capacity of Lagos public institutions to produce excellence.

Civic Exposure
Students see governance firsthand.

25 YEARS. ONE MESSAGE.
Leadership can begin with literacy.
The Lagos State One-Day Governor initiative has quietly shaped generations of confident, articulate young Nigerians. It has told students that they belong in rooms where decisions are made, belong at the table and belong in leadership.
And for 25 years, that message has echoed through classrooms across Lagos State.

Closing Reflection
As Lagos looks toward the future, the One-Day Governor initiative stands not merely as a tradition, but as a promise — that talent will be recognised, excellence will be celebrated, and the next generation of leaders may be found not only in political spaces, but in classrooms, dictionaries in hand.

Thanks to the Jagaban for starting this cute gesture. So open and free. Enviable.
It's sad how responsible she dresses until PASTORS tell her she needs to be 'free'. Imagine who's usually encouraging it, christains.
Which gesture he start, something that was started by Tinubu when he was still Lagos governor

The thing is quite annoying, for the name it means I put or add mouth or talk in Igbo , I don't know what it means in Yoruba, if the girl is igbo, then I kind of see the reason why they may have forced the cap on her because I know I may have seen some other winners who were not forced to wear the cap...

You got a point. But most public schools especially outside Lagos can do Better in enforcing discipline And academic rigour in their students. Many of them don't just give a Bleep.

She will see how the wheels of governance in Lagos state turns and might want to get involved. Hopefully the menace of divisive Obidients would have all but been eradicated by then and she might even do well in Lagos state politics despite a non native surname, something that used to happen before Obidients happened.

With her brilliance in winning the spelling bee, she would probably get a scholarship and do well for herself in whatever endeavour she chooses.

I think it's a wonderful gesture and congratulate her for such a grand achievement at such a young age.

That's lovely.
Lol. Public school get grade ooo. It's like Unilag and one Usman Danfodio university, Sokoto. They're not same. This is not your average XYZ community high school. This one is a model college.

You write SERIOUS exams to enter, not your normal common entrance, most don't make it because onky the best are selected. Some parents bribe to get in. Each state has just about two but Lagos have about 3 or 4.

They're far more competitive than any private secondary school in Nigeria.

All winners since 2000 are from Lagos State Public Schools as they are picked from the Spelling Bee Competition organised for State owned schools.
That's cool, even though I do watch the event during the days of Tinubu and Fashola, I usually think it's for all schools within the state.
Thanks
