| Agege Bread with "Best Before" Date? Why can’t our local bakers do this? by sinorte(op): 7:48pm On Feb 17 |
I was at the store recently and picked up some Agege-styled bread. What caught my eye wasn't just the softness, but a clear 'Best Before' date printed on the packaging. It seems this is the standard in the Western world, and it got me thinking about our bread industry back home in Nigeria. My Questions for the House: 1. Safety vs. Tradition: Most of us buy bread in nylon bags without any reliable info. We rely on "pressing" the bread to check for freshness. Isn't it time we moved past this and demanded proper labeling? 2. The "Chemical" Factor: Do you think some bakers avoid dates because they use preservatives to keep the bread soft for weeks? A date would force them to be more honest about their ingredients. 3. NAFDAC's Role: Why is it that many of our local staples get away without these basic consumer protections? I know our "street" bread is legendary, but shouldn't we be evolving? Or do you think adding dates will just increase the price of a loaf for no reason? Let’s discuss. Have you ever bought bread in Nigeria that actually had an expiry date? Or are we just "living by faith" with our breakfast?

A country with poor and malnourished-mindset, what time and effort will the customers have to look into expiring dates! Just buy and chop. If you talk, it will be as if you are a badluck to the dealer/manufacturer. Everybody is helping eachother's market in an maladministration-nation. That is the result of wicked leaders! |

Nigerians eat bread freshest, in case you don't know. That thing you bought from the store [with it's lil ol' best before date and all] is stale bread according to Nigerian standard. Imagine a shelf life of 7 WHOLE DAYS from today. That's too long naa. In Nigeria, if you're buying from a retail bread shop, once the bread is older than two days, it's dry. [You will be able to tell] Unless na you wan eat old bread. Then, if you're buying directly from the bakery, it has to be within 24hrs, otherwise, na old bread. Una think say everything wey una buy for outside na standard. 🙄 |

sinorte:That is for some people who are still naive about their health. Normally bread is not too healthy a food. That said, I don't consume any bread that lasts more than one week after baking. Someone might ask how to know when it was baked. Of course I go to the mall where it is baked pick my number and wait for the number of minutes given to get the bread oven fresh. Any bread that lasts more than one week after baking is harmful because it contains preservatives. Best before date that spans through three weeks. Haba, is it still bread? |

I don't think anything is worse on this forum than Seun use of force. How could you restrict my right of thought? I must type a certain number of others before being allowed to contribute? Where's the freedom of thought, if I'm a man of few words? Is that how Twitter he talks on everyday is? |

Mariangeles:I noticed this too. I usually like that he/she asks me questions that is specifically business related and seems courteous when appreciating my answers but I am deciding to stop answering from now on. I have high aversion to people who see negativity in everything as they will eventually turn that light on me too. It's just a matter of time. |

sinorte:I get really irritated and sad when we I read or hear “like western countries”. Make an argument because it is the right argument to make back it up with facts but that like western countries just belies an inferiority complex. For example, most of the food in America for example is bad, unnatural/ infested with chemicals, best before or no best before. 99% of our problems in this country is always trying to be like others and not appreciating or developing what we are. . Bread is very simple, organic bread should become mouldy after about 5 days left out in the open. If it doesn’t they are putting something in your bread. Secondly avoid breads with funny flavored smells, and other ingredients like “butter” or flavorings. To start with no bakery in Nigeria can afford to bake with butter. What they call butter is margarine and margarine is refined vegetable oil. I am not against labeling. Bread is very simple: yeast, flour, water and salt. Once it starts to contain anything other than that, you should avoid. You can tell from the smell, taste or how long it lasts if things have been added. There seems to be a trend for alll manner of funny smelling so called flavoured bread. Even the smell of the fresh loaf is nauseating to me. I lived abroad for decades, looking forward to coming back home to eat natural foods as nature intended only to get back to see we have “tried to be like the west” and infested almost all our foods with chemicals. No wonder so many are getting cancer! You don’t need best before for bread. Even in the UK if you keep bread for 5 days it will develop mould talk less Nigeria with 90% humidity. If it doesn’t stop buying that brand. That’s the surest sign it is infested with chemicals. |

Why will my bread be soft and eatable for weeks?? ![]() If bacteria can't eat the bread, then I can't. That's how we pack poison into our bodies in the name of eating 'long lasting' bread |
