Re: My Little Farming Adventure In Picutures by safarifarms(op):
On Friday 19th December 2025 I got a female piglet to finally start my piggery.
Yesterday, Wednesday 24th December 2025 I got another female piglet from another farm. Both piglets are said to be 6 weeks old. They are crisscross of breeds. I'll be adding a male in January or February. That is mainly because only one pen is fully ready for use at the moment and I want to observe and understand how the deep litter system that I'm trying to use will work with the pigs before continuing with it for other pens or discontinuing.

I'm starting with mixed breeds as I'm completely knew to pig farming. When I understand it well, I'll get pure breeds and phase these ones out.

It also happened that on Friday after getting the 1st piglet, my farm worker stole some of my money which I got to realize the next day (Saturday). After being confronted with proof, he stopped lying and finally admitted. Then he decided not to work again.

By the way, merry Christmas to everyone.

When the new piglet was introduced, the 1st piglet started following and sniffing the new one, soon it started attacking the new one.
The attacks were mild initially like mild biting of the ear but it soon spiraled to a serious fight. Now I have to separate them, but I'd only gotten one pen ready. I temporarily moved the old one to an uncompleted pen where its on bare floor. My mentor says its not good and suggested I partition the pen for them. So I had to quickly get a carpenter to partition the pen. Extra unplanned expenses.

The partition was completed around 7pm and I moved the piglets back to the pens. One on each side and waited to see what will happen.
I had fresh food and water in the throughs, but instead of eating, both piglets were focused on trying to cross to the other ones side.
Later the new piglet found a space that was wide enough to fit its head and tried to use that to cross over but couldn't pass. The old one bit it's ear and it screamed and struggled to get out but was stuck. I had to rush in in attempt to rescue it but it was able to free itself just as I got into the pen. Yet its still busy trying to cross over. Both piglets won't eat or drink water. The old one will go to the feed a bit and soon leave to come back to the divider. When I'd felt that at least they can't cross over I left to bath. Still concerned that they didn't eat or drink water that evening and especially for the new one that hadn't eaten or drank since it came. Now I'd taken the light away and concerned that there's no hope of them eating that evening.

By 3am I went to check on them and found them chilling together side by side in one pen. 😳 Can't find where the new one crossed over to the other side. No more fighting. The old one still tries to bully the new one a bit but that one just ignores it and it doesn't seem bothered at all. Looks like the new one really likes company. This morning I cleaned out the old food and put new one and they rushed it together
The new one even seemed more aggressive in the feeding often pushing the old one. The new one seems to also be slightly more bigger.

Each time I go back there they are resting side by side. Can you imagine?
I'm actually happy that they can now stay together even though I'm pained for the unnecessary expenditure.

Waterleaves & pineapple.

I once had about 100 stands of pineapple but I've cleared of some to start afresh with ones that don't have much spikes.

1. Some pineapples with a citrus plant that was transplanted about a month ago.(not sure which one is that)
2. A wild pineapple that one adhoc worker got from a bush and planted the sucker on the farm. I've since removed the nonsense pineapple.
3 & 4. Waterleaves

Picture upload quota exhausted again.
Is that a plastic mulch I'm seeing on the side?

Good work sir.

1 to 3 are 3 of the 5 avocado stands on the farm.

No. 4 is a strange mushroom I saw in the bush behind my farm. Has anyone seen such before?
That mushroom looks poisonous

Last week Saturday we planted corn.

Yesterday, I had to send away my farm worker. I've had enough of him.

Expecting to a replacement soon.

Today I and my daughter planted more brachiaria grass for out goats.
Your worker, is he paid a salary monthly or its a contract split?

Ginger is cool money now. How did you plant it. Seeds or grafting. I have no idea.

I plan to start my farming side hustle by March. Which is purely Ugu, water leaf, bitter leaf and maybe pepper. Setting up the farm house now. But I don't know how to do with worker. I feel I might just need 1 worker since it's a 6 plots stead. And I plan most of the processes to be automated with time.
But fear still dey catch because this is a new territory for me

Don't be afraid. Start your side farming hustle and you will learn along the way. Be bold and full of faith that you will succeed. I am also going to do great things this farming season by God's grace. I am already doing compound crop farming. I already harvest pawpaw , Zobo and Plantain . Other crops are coming up. Cheers.

It's a tarpaulin that I used to make a shallow pond to raise duckweed, but toads and frogs won't let it work as expected

Ginger a rhizome and its planted by cutting the rhizomes to small pieces. Each piece must have at least a node or two. Its the same ginger you eat that is cut for planting.

Before you venture, please take out time to learn.

Hi guys

Happy new year, I pray this new year brings to us great fortune, comfort and peace of mind.

Some months back I posted on this platform I wanted to go into proper farming.

I met an agronomists through referrals here on Nairaland. The guy really messed me up. We did 17k Habanero F1 nursery on seed bed in November, and we presently barely have up to 1k pepper stand on the farm.

I feel really pained. Nevertheless I'm not giving up, because this is something I really want to do.

I'm presently nursing another ten thousand habanero Mawenzili RZ F1 seeds (10,000 pepper seeds)

I'm very hopeful this will yield good result, and my testimony shall be full.

Please elders in the house I will need our inputs and guidance.

I made wooden net house for the nursery, am not gambling using seed bed again.

The seeds are planted using porting soil.

Nursery was done 20th of December.

Chemical and Fertilizer I Have Gotten

- Poultry waste
- NPK 15-15-15
- Bonos
- Calcium Nitrate
- SSP
- Dominator
- Lara Force

Some fodder trees & grasses that I planted for my goats.

1. Newly planted brachiaria mullato
2. Super napier
3. Fodder Guinea corn
4. Leucaena & Gliricidia (leguminous trees)
I’m planting brachiaria this season and I’m wondering where I can get them

Many people sell local brachiaria (that is what I got first). I got brachiaria mulato 2 from "Farming in Africa".

Good evening to you, Mr Safarifarms.

I have a question to ask; can a grafted guava plant still survive, even when the leaves are drying up?

I think it will depend on what is causing the leaves to be drying up. If the problem is taken care off, then the tree should recover. If it's caused by disease, tackle the disease. If it's lack of water, then water consistently and mulch to retain water. However if it's a very old tree that it's time is up, then there may be little you can do to help it.

Okay. It's a young plant that I had planted by a gardener.
I'm guessing it reacted so due to change of location. I kept on watering it regardless.

The issue is, I'm no longer in the location for now, but I'm hoping it'll survive with the care I showed it while there. cheesy
Hoping to go back and see it still thriving.

Some leaves can fall off due to transplant shock especially if the transplant disturbed the root system. In such a case adequate care is what is needed for it to survive. If you root system is disturbed like the root ball scattering for it to loose soil around the root then partial shading from strong sun rays can help. Steady watering during the recovery period is also helpful. It should stabilize after about 10 days to 2 weeks. If you had applied fresh/hot manure like fresh chicken manure without allowing it to cure, then there's a much high chance of it dying from strong urea in the manure. It's not likely to survive up to 2 weeks. If it has survived up to 2 weeks then it's not likely due to manure unless you applied it lately (after transplant).

Okay. This really helps.
Thank you very much.

I'm positive it'll make it by the time I go back.
