Kunle Afolayan Signs Historic Film Pact With Benin Republic by alphonsoolajide(op): 11:44am On Feb 20
Renowned Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has sealed a landmark collaboration between his company, Kunle Afolayan Productions (KAP) Group, and the Republic of Benin in a move aimed at strengthening cross-border creative development and advancing African cinema.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Lagos at the KAP Hub, the filmmaker’s creative headquarters, following an official invitation from the Beninese Presidency to establish a strategic partnership focused on transforming the region’s audiovisual and film production ecosystem. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Both parties described the agreement as a significant milestone designed to leverage cinema, youth empowerment and creative enterprise as tools for cultural diplomacy, economic development and global positioning of African storytelling.

The partnership comes weeks after Afolayan, alongside KAP Executive Director Seun Soyinka, led a senior management delegation to Benin Republic, where discussions were held with government officials and key stakeholders in the country’s film and creative sectors.

The consultations focused on developing sustainable structures to boost local content creation, enhance technical expertise and position Benin as a growing hub for film production on the continent.

Following directives from the Beninese President, a high-level delegation travelled to Lagos to formalise the agreement.

Members of the delegation included presidential advisers on media, audiovisual, arts and culture, as well as representatives from cultural development agencies and creative institutions.

On the Nigerian side, the hosting team featured Afolayan, Soyinka and Professor Tunji Azeez, Head of School at the KAP Film & Television Academy.

The collaboration is structured around three major pillars:

Film Co-Production: Joint production of films that showcase authentic African narratives while expanding international market reach.

Youth Training and Capacity Development: Structured training programmes covering filmmaking, production and creative entrepreneurship.

Film Infrastructure Development: Establishment and operation of a world-class Film City in Ouidah, Benin Republic.

The initiative will also utilise the expertise of KAP subsidiaries, including KAP Motion Pictures, the KAP Film & Television Academy and the KAP Film Village & Resort in Igbojaye-Komu, Oyo State.

As part of the official activities scheduled between February 19 and 22, the Beninese delegation is expected to tour KAP’s production facilities in Lagos and the film village in Oyo State, which has become a model for integrated film production, training and cultural tourism in Africa.

Speaking on the agreement, Afolayan described the partnership as a defining moment for African cinema, emphasising the importance of collaboration in projecting African stories globally.

A representative of the Beninese government also expressed optimism about the partnership, particularly in the area of skills development and industry capacity building.

Both parties noted that the MoU marks the beginning of a long-term alliance aimed at raising standards in film production, creative education and cultural expression across Africa.

This is long overdue.

The Yoruba film industry used to draw talents from Ajase in those days but started dwindling and our Yoruba kith and kin in Benin Republic got left behind or isolated from mainstream Yoruba entertainment industry.

Ricos Campos is a multitalented Beninoise superstar artist who sings in indigenous Yoruba Egun dialect. He has done great in fusing his Yoruba identity into Egun songs to the delight of his Dahomey and Yoruba base but has not penetrated the mainstream Yoruba music base like Angelique Kidjo. This kind of psrtnership helps many established artists like him and inspires upcoming ones.

This guy should be studied for the BUSINESS OF FILMMAKING. Underline the word, BUSINESS. I remember back then when he did The CEO and partnered with an airline. He is always looking for ways to make sure that film business is serious business. That was the movie he made sure entered flights. He is also always insisting that creators must be rewarded for their creativity instead of selling it for peanuts and fame. Anyone who undermines him is not serious yet.

Afolayan had earlier said he would only fully return to cinema releases if filmmakers were no longer required to engage in exhausting promotional activities, including frequent social media dances, to sell their movies.

I totally agree with him. In fact, this is what made Bovi do in-person shows. He too said that he already has the craft, he has the product, those wey wan come and know the deal will come, he won't succumb to social media ridicule of this generation turning him to something else. That's why he went to Benin, Lagos and did his shows and said he won't do those crazy promotions online just to sell his tickets. If you notice, his show is so different, it doesn't have those insults, DJ mixes and noise the other comedians use to steal time and your money. Will people still go to those shows? Yes but the sky is big for everyone and that's what Kunle wrote in that proverb. Bovi further said he wanted to appreciate his original fans and removed those oppressive tables we use to extort ourselves in these comedy shows.

Afolayan is from the TK School of Works so I am not surprised with his mature comments. After some years, the work that was done for the art will speak louder than the work that was done for the fart money. Art is long, life is short.

Keep building your legacy Kunle. From the interviews I have watched of him and read, he understands the business angle of this industry and this last line means a lot if you want to put respect on your name and get your work's worth:

Well, he might have just been right about his "intellectual claims" concerning his movies. Personally, I sometimes find them kinda boring (or too serious??), though with great graphics.

Thumbs up to him...

He often leaves a cliffhanger which is an assignment for students. Those who studied drama then have to analyse and interpret and conclude on their own. He recently said his movies are for intellectuals grin Something about his movies is that he has the possibility of doing a part 2 or series when he drops it off for you to conclude.

Kunle Afolayan knows the art and business of film making.... He is a thorough-bred and not like some gate-crashers.

He is moving beyond the confines of Nigeria and now dealing with presidents of other nations...

Give it to him , and don't be bitter

grin grin Nice one! We all know Yoruba people are the movers and shakers of Nollywood film production, giving us record breaking, history making, award winning films_Kunle Afolayan, Funke Akindele, Toyin Abraham, Wumi Toriola, Femi Adebayo, Odunlade, among others.
A Yoruba actor ,Itele , recently gave out a masterpiece, Koleoso, which became the first African movie to garner 100 million views on YouTube.
Movies written and produced by Yoruba filmmakers are very well scripted, life like, intriguing and suspense filled.
Check films_ Ijakumo, October 1,Orisa, Koleoso, Behind the scenes, A tribe called Judah, Oversabi Aunty.
Now Nollywood veteran and screen goddess, Omotola Jalade Ekehinde is set to join the league of movers and shakers, with her debut production, Mother's Love.
Not these wacky Ass films flying all over YT.

The more I love Kunle Afolayan. He fall my hand when he teased people who dance to promote their craft. This goes on to show that human will be human. And someone may be rated the successful yet look unhappy. Success, happiness is nothing but a state of mind.

I agree with some of your point. I’m a fan of him. I truly love his movie because I’ve been following him since the time of Ṣawaro Idẹ but ẹgbọn fvck up big time. He said the sky is big for birds to fly. But why is he bittered that people promote their movies in ways they like? WHY? This thing of “class” is a serious problem in our country. I’m a movie critics. I virtually all kind of movies in Nigeria from different genres, from Kannywood to Hollywood till the least grade of movie. I know quality works and mere works but your people (fans) who love quality will be for you when they see that you produce quality movie. You don’t need to even advertise. It’s just like saying I dey sell okrika for market, because you dey for boutique with AC selling quality clothes, you come dey vex for me because I dey use bell and dancing to advertise my goods. Ó wrong now. I may love Afolayan but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t call him out. Shey aunty Funke small ni? Aunty Funke thay has been acting since 90s, someone who featured in “I Need To Know”. By the way, I never see aunty Kemi Adetiba, mama mi Mo Abudu or aunty Jadesola Osiberu or even Mr Kayode Kasum, Femi Adebayo with Niyi Akinmolayan to come out and be talking in the format Kunle Afolayan talks. It really paint a character flaw in him. As a filmmaker that he is, but his first series of Anikulapo flop now? I only see ẹgbọn Kunle as the bitter person here who want us to regard him when it comes to Nigeria movie but I can tell you that he no longer produce meaningful movie anymore. He’s even banking on his old glory.

P. S: You’re one of the few i respect here. Don’t mind my long explanation😂 and few typos by the way, I’m an aspiring filmmaker too. So I know how these work.

Lest, I forget you talk about the business of filmmaking, I think ẹgbọn Kunle should go and learn that now from ẹgbọn Fẹmi Adebayọ. The way Femi Adebayo marketed his Agẹṣinkọle part two need to be studied in school.

I’ll be back. Time for lunch🥳

I don't know why anyone will have a problem with what he said except of course his movies are truly too complex for them to understand. He has his target audience and they are happy with him.

First movie producer to truly curb piracy of his movies, does that sound like a joke to you?

He takes pride in his work and I respect him more for that. He's not trying to satisfy everyone because factually, most of you are not worth it.

Enjoy your lunch sir but let me give you these two interviews to watch first. Digest them and let us see your analysis afterwards. I look forward to hearing from you later on.

☝️
This was the interview that generated the story you are talking about.

2. Kunle Afolayan’s Interview At Arise After the Funke Akindele Remarks

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXcY2be0Ar0

I will give you mine before I read from you. It was obvious a lot of people did not watch the event where Kunle made the remarks about the film industry. I too would have been carried away by the news I read so I watched not only Kunle's talk at the event, but added Mo and the other business tycoon who talked about the business of film industry. One thing I found remarkable was how respectful Kunle was to the older ones at the event and the cinema operators who he has a problem with. He called Mo Abudu aunty or something like that. Those are people he competes with, yet he gave honor to whom it is due. He recognized even the short film makers and that is why he believes the sky is big enough for everyone - do your thing and I do my thing. Focus on your focus, I focus on my focus but our people have a comprehension problem. They always want to compare and fight for laurels.

When I watched the Arise interview, his friend, the anchor made the interview about Kunle and Funke but he was able to explain his side of the story and say what happened and how he wasn't attacking anyone. We have not heard from Funke yet but I sense a form of insecurity and competition. I had quoted Bovi as a reference in my earlier comment and that is because the OG are seeing that there is a new bandwagon of this generation who are loud and rude and they act like a mob because their favorite is talked about. Seun Kuti has observed this in Wizkid Mob, Sunday Oliseh said this of Osimhen just to mention a few. This generation believes in noise and money. They believe that who are you to question them when they are making money. They don't believe in those who were there before them and the internet. They don't see the full picture, they are carried away by the fame but the OGs know the game and want the proper share of the pie. Every young generation get strong head but this their own is the most abusive and history is kind to the future. Una go learn, just give it time. Time is a patient gentleman.

Finally, I think they should be thankful to Kunle for fighting for the industry because if you remove the matter of personalities, he is simply saying LET THE MONEY COME TO THE FILMMAKERS and their people. Don't sell it to foreigners just because.... Even Mo Abudu said the same thing when she shared her experience at the event but who wan hear go hear.
Re: Kunle Afolayan Signs Historic Film Pact With Benin Republic by 9jaBloke:
Big ups Kunle 👍. He has his flaws like we all do but I love him to bits.

I saw The Figurine over a decade ago and it is still in my head.

I have seen most of his work and they all left me with the same really good feeling.

He doesn't compromise on quality. It's either a 💯 or he won't touch it.

Once upon a time, our film industry was filled with great producers and top notch productions.

Now, there's too much bad work out there for the OGs not to appreciate Kunle and a few others.
