sensible person will first ask what does Russia stand to gain from you knowing that their language has more speakers within Europe that’ll make them pay someone on NL to write about it .

You can fact check instead of thinking it's a propaganda. Ask yourself between Russia and UK which is more populated. You don't just end there some part of USSR speak the Russian language so those countries today part of them speak Russian language like in Ukraine for an example.

The person doesn't likely know how big the USSR was.

Why are many people surprised by this statistics. Growing up, I have always thought English is the most spoken language in the world, but the day I googled it and saw Mandarin which belongs to China. I marvel, and after more research, the reason wasn't far fetched. China has the highest population in the world of almost 2b people.
If in over 200+ countries of the world estimated at 8b+ and only China have 25% of it, then why should I doubt their language been the most spoken. Not to talk they still have those who speaks it from their neighbouring countries of Hong Kong, Taiwan and co.
.
So in case of Russia, they are the highest population in Europe. And it's a given they will be the most spoken language. Not to talk of most of the countries that split from them that still marginally speaks Russia. So it's a no brainier that they will be the most spoken language.
But in terms of language spread all over the world, then I have to give it to English.
I hope my explanation is understood

This is how some people think their brain is firing on full cylinders then fail big in small WAEC. In continental Europe, no one natively speaks English outside of UK, Ireland, Gibraltar, Isle of Man and maybe only a small minority in Malta. That's around 70 to 75 million.

Russian is natively spoken in Russia, East of Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Estonia, Moldova. That's more than 130 million in Europe alone. No other language comes close.

What the blab are you are talking about?

I spoke only English when I visited Norway and most of them heard me. Same with Finland. Even Poland though I didn't go there but a friend there spoke only English until he learned Polish.

Oga sir, It's true. Russian is Europe's most spoken native language with more than one hundred million speakers.

Even most Nigerians don't know that US is a Spanish speaking country, with more than 60 million speakers of Spanish who are not migrants from Latin America.

English is the world's most spoken language followed by mandarin. Mandarin is the most spoken language in china but not the only language.
English by virtue of second language and mandarin as the highest by natives.
