Supreme Court strikes down Trump's sweeping global tariffs

The Supreme Court has struck down some of Donald Trump's most sweeping global tariffs, upending one of the White House's top policy priorities and injecting new uncertainty into global trade.

In a 6-3 decision, the justices in America's highest court said the law Trump used to impose some of his most significant tariffs did not authorise him to do so.

The ruling opens the door to potentially billions of dollars in tariff refunds, delivering a major victory to the small businesses and states that had challenged the measures.

The Trump administration had contended that the duties were justified under a law empowering the president to respond to national emergencies.

But lawyers for the challenging states and private firms said that the law used by the president to impose the levies made no mention of the word "tariffs".

They argued that Congress did not intend to hand off its power to tax or give the president an "open-ended power to junk" other existing trade deals and tariff rules.

In his opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts sided with that view.

"When Congress has delegated its tariff powers, it has done so in explicit terms and subject to strict limits," he wrote.

"Had Congress intended to convey the distinct and extraordinary power to impose tariffs, it would have done so expressly, as it consistently has in other tariff statutes."

Trump is the most erratic president that has ever ruled the US. Not a good leader

Decent country. In the poverty capital of the world. Primitive judges and legislators sing "on your mandate" to a backdoor president. And the citizens of that country (some citizens), who are some the most badly governed people in history of man, are happy about the aberration.

The way Trump talks sometimes, I think his German ancestry if traced properly, might end up being in Hitler's lineage.. His absolute hatred of any checks on his executive powers is nauseating ..

I just watched the man abuse the Supreme Court Justices and their families, throwing tantrums like an entitled kid who has been denied candy..

This is something even Tinubu, as rugged and zoological as he is, has never done..

For someone who never served his country in the Military (some say he dodged the draft), he asks a whole lot of it....With all his blustering and bullying, one would think he did 7 tours in Iraq or Vietnam for his Country grin

But I consider it a good thing that the US, despite its other inadequacies, have strong institutions like the Judiciary who can rein in other organs of Government who want to go rogue..

So they still have a Supreme Court. Good to know. For a moment, I thought they'd become Putin's Russia.
Re: Trump's Tariffs Struck Down By Supreme Court by badoh(m): 8:34pm On Feb 20
Trump just deh operate without recourse to the constitution. Most of his decisions and actions are dictatorial in nature and it's their supreme court that is putting him under check else he will get away with everything. Even If America is so developed, that doesn't give the president the right to rule and take decisions anyhow he feels as long as he believes he's right.

His commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick (prominent in the Epstein files), set up a business with his sons.

They bought all the refunds from some companies incase the Supreme court made this ruling.

USA is not Nigeria where the President owns every institution including those that are supposed to oversight him. So u need to correct yourself. The Supreme Court of the USA does not stand on the mandate of the president as done in Africa.

People resign in America, but in Africa, people rather d1e than resign, so they take all the rubbish from executive and on his mandate they keep standing.

Here in Nigeria, ordinary wike can turn judiciary into a nursery and primary school where pupils behave immaturely. When you read some judgement, you wonder if the judge in question ever passed through secondary school, let alone undergo a university training
