‘We Have Freedom Of Speech’: UK Policewoman Defends Christian Preacher During Tense Confrontation In Muslim-Majority Area

A police officer in the United Kingdom has been widely commended after defending a Christian street preacher’s right to free speech during a tense confrontation in Whitechapel, East London.

The incident, which was captured on video and circulated on social media, occurred along Whitechapel Road, near the East London Mosque, one of the largest mosques in Western Europe, according to Mail Online.

In the footage, a female officer of the Metropolitan Police is seen addressing a group of men who had confronted the preacher, telling them: “In this country, we have freedom of speech.”

The confrontation reportedly happened earlier in the week, a day before the commencement of Ramadan.

The preacher, who was holding a microphone and a Bible, was heard preaching about Christianity when several men challenged him. At one point, a man in the crowd shouted: “Talk about Jesus, don’t talk about Muhammad. Don’t say Muhammad.”

Another individual was seen pushing the preacher from behind, causing him to stumble forward.

A man in a black surgical mask told the officer: “This is Whitechapel, this is a Muslim area,” while others accused the preacher of insulting Islam’s Prophet Muhammad and making derogatory comments about Islamic beliefs.

One of the men claimed he had contacted the police because the preacher was “spreading hatred” and allegedly referred to the Black Stone in Mecca as “a box.”

The preacher denied the allegations, stating that he was quoting Islamic texts and did not insult the Prophet.

The officer, however, maintained that the preacher was not being aggressive and reminded the group that freedom of speech applies equally to all.

“You guys don’t need to see eye-to-eye, and you don’t need to agree,” she said in the video. “I understand that you don’t want to hear it, so I would recommend that you just move away and don’t listen to him.”

She further noted that the preacher was at risk of being assaulted but reiterated that monitoring cameras were in place in what she described as a “heavily Muslim community.”

According to the latest census data, Muslims make up just over half of Whitechapel’s population.

The Metropolitan Police have not issued an official statement regarding the incident as of the time of filing this report.

The video has since sparked debate online over free speech, religious tolerance and policing in multicultural communities in Britain.
