Premium Tribalism: DIG Frank Mba Dumped As Tinubu Picks Tunji Over IGP Job by truthera(op):
Tinubu dumps DIG Frank Mba for another Yoruba man Tunji Disu who has few months to retire from the service.... Many social commentators are foaming in the mouth to justify blatant Yoruba divisive tribal politics of Tinubu's government over the latest loopsided IGP appointment. I've read several comments by some users making the lame excuse that Tunji Disu joined the force before Mba but what they intentionally fail to acknowledge in their usual attempt to whitewash chronic tribalism and systemic injustice that pervades Nigeria public service especially against igbos is that he holds a law degree and other notable qualifications that puts him far ahead and over qualified even for the job. Here is a link to his Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Mba_(police_officer)

This profound Yoruba tribalism can best be described by the attached social media post below.... Tinubu's continued blatant disregard for federal character, his shameless show of tribalism over governance has once again exposed the deep divide that exists nationally for the whole world to see that Nigeria has no unity, a country that only exists on paper.... All-well meaning people especially the igbos who value their future and that of their children must seek decentralization or permanent exit from the damning cosmetic union that has nothing to offer them but shame..... I will end this with a famous quote from our big bro Nnamdi Kanu in one broadcast he made to his people....

Serve Nigeria and you will return in shame. They will disgrace you before the world and abandon you....

I do not think Nigerians are tired of Tinubu yet since they have given him a pass mark by handing him another 4 years (They did nothing to stop him having his way over realtime transmission of election results)..... Nothing should surprise you about the atrocities of his government going forward....

@garykoeman, you are wrong, Mba is over qualified..... Read below

Was Mbah really “senior” to Disu in the Nigeria Police Force?

- Entry as a crucial difference

Tunji Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on 18 May 1992 as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). Born on 13 April 1966, he graduated from Lagos State University in 1990 before receiving a direct commission as an ASP. That placed him immediately within the commissioned officer cadre. Mbah, by contrast, enlisted in 1992 – the same year – but as an Inspector. He only attained the same ASP rank in 1999, seven years after Disu got his commission.

Mbah later earned a law degree from the University of Lagos and got called to the Bar in 2002. From that point on, he was unstoppable and in no time he not only met up but also overtook Disu in rank. In practical terms, therefore, Disu was already two ranks ahead when both entered the Force.

- The climbs — and overtakes

Mbah’s promotions came steadily and strategically. His record shows promotions through every rank: ASP (1999), DSP (2003), SP (2008), CSP (2012), ACP (2014), DCP (2018), CP (2020), AIG (March 2023), and finally DIG (June 2023).

Disu’s career path was slower but more operationally focused. He served as DPO in several states, commanded SARS units, participated in UN peacekeeping in Darfur, and led the Lagos Rapid Response Squad from 2015 to 2021. In August 2021, he became head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), succeeding the flamboyant Abba Kyari. His promotion to Commissioner of Police was in March 2023, the same year that Mbah bolted away, earning two accelerated promotions to AIG and DIG.

On paper, therefore, Mbah was senior in rank to Disu before the Tinubu acting appointment.

As I mentioned yesterday, If the appointment of Disu is what it will take for Tinubu to midwife the birth of state police forces, bring him on!

Now is not the time for equivocation or, rather, for an unknown quantity to pour sand sand into our nation's pot of garri.

We have come too far on the journey towards regional policing.

Meanwhile, how do we respond to the assertions made by the social commentators referenced below.

Did you Know that DIG Frank Mba is actually Junior to most of the Officers he became Senior to at Recruitment? He got faster Promotion by influence and by Quota system through the Federal Character Principle.

Both Frank Mba and Tunji Disu were recruited to the Nigeria Police in 1992. While Tunji was recruited as a University Graduate at ASP rank, Frank Mba was recruited with O-Level as a constable but luckily went for Cadet Inspector level in 1994. Over the years and by influence, Mba got accelerated promotion and became the same rank with Disu, and later by Federal Character, became his senior because the vacancy available for DIG then was for Southeast. As a matter of fact, most of the mates of Mba are presently at ACP rank with very few at most in DCP rank. In contrast, Disu’s mates are the most senior in Police today. There’s nothing nepotic about it. When Mba was moving fast ahead of his seniors, not with merit, there’s no uproar. We need to learn to do the right thing in the right way in Nigeria.

Disu joined the Nigeria Police on ASP rank and as a university graduate in 1992 Mba became an ASP in 1999 and became a university graduate in 2001.

Retiring as a DIG is no Mean Feat and as a Patriotic Nigerian with Age on his Side, I believe he would still contribute a lot in Service to Nigeria! I Continue to wish him well in his Future Endeavors!

Dim Emeka Obasi - A Public Relations and Media Consultant Writes from Abuja
THE NEW IGP.
I am compelled to talk about this because a lot of people are calling to ask my views about it.

From available documents Tunji Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force in May 18th 1992.

Frank Mba joined the Nigeria Police Academy in Kano in 1994 graduating as the best cadet inspector in 1995

DSP Frank Mbah who was subsequently promoted to SP in 2008 was announced as the new Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Lagos State to replace SP Olubode Ojajuni who today is CP Interpol annex Alagbon on the 3rd of December, 2007

CSP Mba was the Nigeria Force Public Relations Officer from February 2012 to August, 2014 taking over from Moshood Jimoh who is now CP Lagos State Command and was subsequently promoted to ACP and made Area Commander.

Disu on the other hand was a contingent commander, of the Nigerian Police contingent on African Union Mission peacekeeping mission Darfur in Sudan until 2006 when he returned back to Nigeria.

He was Officer in Charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and anti-kidnapping in River State.

And later SARS commander in Ondo, Oyo and Rivers States again.

He was also (2IC) State Criminal Investigations Department Rivers States.

Before his appointment as commander of the Lagos State Rapid Respond Squad (RRS) between June 13, 2015, to August 2021 when he was promoted to DCP.

Frank was appointed and decorated as a Deputy Inspector-General of Police in March 2025 as the head of the Department of Logistics and Supply, he oversees the technical, administrative, and logistical needs of the entire Nigeria Police Force, including procurement, works, housing, and the Force Quarter-Master.

Tunji Disu became Deputy Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

And was appointed the new head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), a position previously held by Abba Kyar on August 2, 2021, by Usman Alkali Baba, the then IGP and was was promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police in March 2023

The fact remains that, in Nigeria, every rank beyond Commissioner of Police has all the trappings of politics.

Today some of Disu’s colleagues are still oscillating between CP and AIG while he is now the IGP.

Also most of Frank’s mate are still Commissioner of Police whilst he rose to the enviable rank of a Deputy Inspector General of Police.

They are both fine and innovative officers of the Nigeria Police Force and easily accessible by everyone who has had dealings with them.

We can only charge the New IGP innovate new tactics to revolutionize the Nigeria Police and hopefully write his name in gold in the sand of time, as he did when he was Commander of the Lagos State Rapid Respond Squad (RRS) between June 13, 2015, to August 2021.

I hope I have been able to educate someone who is not blinded by sentiments this morning?

I come in peace.

Lol...

When e reach your turn, give the critical security positions to people you don't trust.

There's a reason the constitution gave the president the power to select the IG of police instead of using hierarchy.

Out of all the DIGs, why should it be Mba?

If I recall, every senior police officer has a degree so you saying Mba has a law degree without comparing what academic certification Disu has is an attempt at painting Disu as not qualified for the job.

Secondly, Disu is in acting capacity and going by the Police Service Commission rules, the IG must come from the lower CP rank which both Disu and Mba are automatically disqualified from.

Once a substantive appointment is made by the President, both Disu and Mba will be forced to retire.

This is the norm in the military when the President decorates a new CDS, COAS and GOCs. All senior officers are relieved of their appointments to make way for the President's choice as its the President that is the Commander n Chief and he has the sole discretion to appoint who he wants as his Staff officers and GOCs.

So that means, Disu will have to be retired alongside Mba and a new appointment made from the CP rank.

Another point I want you to know is that the highest attainable rank for a Police officer is the CP rank. Anything higher is a political appointment at the full discretion of the President after considerations from the Civil Service nomination list.

Lastly, Mba has always been in the PR section of the Police starting with his days as PR to Lagos CP before he was elevated to head the Force PR . A t no time do I recall him being an operational CP or AIG or DPO. So he does not have operational experience compared to Disu who is currently an AIG and head of a Zonal command.

So all these your rants and persecution and discrimination rants don't cut it.

Mba has enjoyed a meteoric rise in promotions compared to others and like in most organizations was obviously promoted above his competency levels.

At no time has the IG been appointed from the DIG or even AIG rank.

All DIGs and AIGs are expected to be retired once the IG is sacked or retired from office.

So why should it be any different now?

Even your Mba knew that his appointment to DIG had already ruled him out from the IG position.

This reminds me of a Bayelsan officer who served as ADC to Jonathan when he was deputy Governor and later Governor of Bayelsa and followed GEJ as his aide when he became VP and later President.

The officer had gone to court challenging his promotion from CP to DIG by the late Buhari administration because he was positioned as a then CP to be the most qualified to become the next IG.

So why should the situation change now because of your Mba?
Re: Premium Tribalism: DIG Frank Mba Dumped As Tinubu Picks Tunji Over IGP Job by truthera(op): 6:55am On Feb 27
The president should be seen to respect police hierarchical system put in place to ensure that only highest ranking officers are considered for top police jobs. Because Buhari or any other president before Tinubu toed the path of tribalism and favoritism in the past does not make what Tinuhu is doing now right..... No good police officer who puts in his best and rises through the ranks deserve to be treated the way Frank Mba and other DIGs were treated by Tinubu. Why should a senor officer be forced into early retirement so that a junior unqualified officer can rise and be placed above them to satisfy the selfish political agenda of the president.... This is part of the reason why Nigeria’s police force can not improve as it is no longer about law enforcement or tackling insecurity but pandering to the selfish wishes of greedy politicians.....

As usual, you ignored all I said and went for your usual emotional blackmail.

There is no precedence here rather it is the Police Service Commision act you should go and study which states clearly that the IG will be selected from the pool of CP ranks.

This is to ensure that all the DIGs and AIGs work towards the success of the IG.

Same thing applies in civil service where the sack of the head of an MDA usually goes hand in hand with the sack of all directors as well.

And why do you keep hammering on Mba?

Is he the only DIG?

What made you assume he is the most qualified for the job when he has no single operational experience and worked his entire career as PR or as an aide?

Disu is even 7ys Mba's senior.

Have you asked why Mba suddenly overtook him and became DIG before Disu?

You guys are too tribalistic in your world view and see everything as a deliberate conspiracy against you because this is what you will do if you had the power.

Its now glaring to them that the North, even with decampee Governors doesn't in anyway regard them.

Before then..

It was Dot Nation
Inconsequential 5% votes
Religious politics
Tribal baiting and outright lies against the SE/SS

Now that the NORTH has actually given them a blanket discharge, they are now shouting and empowering Inconsequential people as cityboy movement. With their Southern UNITY Nonsense.

Do you notice that the cityboy movement is only in the SE/SS. That shows you that the NORTH is lost , the Middle belt is lost also, the SW is 80% secure, the SE is a ' NO GO AREA' , the SS is 'SOLIDLY DIVIDED' with the ADC having more people sympathetic to it.

Tinubu has shown how he held Lagos down.

They make the most noise and are the poverty central in the South for a tribe that claims to be suffersticated.

Just pathetic
