The Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget has dismissed reports alleging that ₦4.2bn was proposed in the 2026 budget for the purchase of office furniture and microphones for the Office of the Deputy Governor, describing the claim as a misinterpretation of capital provisions.

In a statement issued on Friday , the ministry clarified that the ₦4,247,816,006 allocation referenced in reports represents the total capital allocation for the Office of the Deputy Governor for the 2026 fiscal year and not an amount solely meant for furniture and microphones.[/i]

“The total capital allocation for the Office of the Deputy Governor for Y2026 is ₦4,247,816,006.

“This figure has been incorrectly represented as an allocation solely for the purchase of office furniture and microphones,” the statement partly read.

According to the ministry, ₦4,077,816,006 out of the total capital vote is earmarked for the reconstruction of the Round House complex.

[i]“Out of the total capital expenditure of the office, the sum of ₦4,077,816,006 is earmarked for the reconstruction of the Round House complex (This is a 6-story building facility that houses over 50 offices), including structural upgrades, retrofitting works, and the provision of alternative energy infrastructure for the building, amongst others,” the statement added.


The government explained that the balance of ₦170m covers office equipment and related capital items.


“The balance in the sum of ₦170,000,000 of the budgeted capital allocated covers purchase of office equipment, office furniture & fittings and other capital items,” it stated.

The ministry noted that screenshots of the relevant budget master sheet were attached for transparency and public review.

It urged stakeholders and media organisations to verify budget details through appropriate channels to avoid inaccurate reporting.

“The Government reiterates that budgetary provisions are guided by due process, fiscal discipline, and established accounting standards. Stakeholders and media organizations are encouraged to seek clarification through appropriate channels to ensure accurate reporting,” the statement read.

The ministry added that the Lagos State Government remains committed to prudent management of public resources and regretted any misunderstanding arising from the classification of the budget items.

Journalist will do well to do a comparison of the sums budgeted for the office of the deputy governors in Nigeria with other countries and publish their findings and that will name and shame prodigal politicians in Nigeria.
