Operator: Why There’s Currently Poor Electricity Supply Across The Nation by adenigga(op): 2:01am On Feb 28
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has said the national grid is receiving only one-third of gas supply needed to provide adequate electricity supply to Nigerians.

In a statement, the management of NISO said the shortage in gas supply has brought on low electricity supply across the country, leading to load shedding.

The statement noted that the development has caused the reduction of electricity generation to 4,300 Megawatts.

The statement added, “We hereby notify the general public and all market participants that the current average available generation of approximately 4,300MW is primarily due to inadequate gas supply to thermal generating stations.”

“Given that thermal plants account for the dominant share of Nigeria’s generation mix, any disruption or limitation in gas supply directly affects available generation capacity and overall grid output. Consequently, the current energy allocated to Distribution Companies (DisCos) reflects the reduced supply available on the grid.

“Available operational data indicates that thermal power plants collectively require an estimated 1,629.75 million standard cubic feet (MMSCF) of gas per day to operate at optimal capacity. However, as of February 23, 2026, actual gas supply to the stations stood at approximately 692.00 MMSCF, representing a significant shortfall in daily gas supply requirements.”

It added that the available gas supply represents less than 43% of the required volume, resulting in constrained generation output.

The statement added, “The current low generation level is fundamentally driven by inadequate gas supply to thermal generating units, leading to reduced energy allocation to the DisCos.”

It stated that when total system generation drops significantly, the Independent System Operator must implement load shedding across the system, while dispatching available energy in line with the NERC MYTO allocation percentages across all distribution networks to maintain grid stability and prevent system disturbances.

The statement said, “While we regret the inconvenience this situation may cause electricity consumers and affected market participants, we will continue to work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure full energy allocation as soon as gas supply improves and generation capacity is restored.”

Why are we suddenly producing half the gas we need?

“Available operational data indicates that thermal power plants collectively require an estimated 1,629.75 million standard cubic feet (MMSCF) of gas per day to operate at optimal capacity. However, as of February 23, 2026, actual gas supply to the stations stood at approximately 692.00 MMSCF, representing a significant shortfall in daily gas supply requirements.”

Normal excuse for poor electricity distribution in Nigeria. Disgrace county.

I believe they mentioned we have sufficient gas, and we are even planning to commercialize it.

Force majeure. You can't sue them. I wonder when Nigeria would diversify from relying mostly on gas. What happened to coal? Canada is generating thousands of megawatts of electricity using their coal power plants...what am I even talking about? Do we even have the manpower to man and maintain any heavy installation? What a country! A country of more 200 million souls.

Tinubu plan is to limit electricity supply for election rigging reason why he bought solar for himself, I can prove it.

The money that the demented Peter Obi used to build beer factory for himself would have been put to better use by building an independent power station in Anambra like he promised when he was sworn in as governor. But time has proven that he lies without shame while always seeking vain glory.

Re: Operator: Why There’s Currently Poor Electricity Supply Across The Nation by Nteogwuija(m): 5:14am On Feb 28
Why can't they just decentralize power and have states generate their own? States who then have excess can sell to other states having deficits.

Why is it that all the governors do in this country is build roads, roads that can't last for 5 years?

Common waste disposal systems these men in state power can't make provisions for. You walk around cities and they're filled with debris.

Y is governance in Nigeria looking harder than going to the moon?

Modified: So, thanks to the Electricity Act 2023, states can now generate and transmit electricity, yet we aren't hearing news of governors finalizing deals with investors in the power sector.

All they do is collect money to pay salaries month after month. Very lazy set of brains we have as governors. Tueh!
Re: Operator: Why There’s Currently Poor Electricity Supply Across The Nation by richiemcgold:
The monthly bills have increased, but the power supply have reduced to little or nothing. We are being forced to pay for service that was never rendered. I only have pity for those electricity workers that move about the neighborhood with ladders to disconnect, it is a matter of time before Nigerians start attacking them one by one.

Tinubu should fire the current power minister and replace him immediately with someone more competent. This man is just there existing and wasting our resources.

We’re discussing the erratic power supply under Tinubu, but you chose to deflect with Peter Obi, a private citizen because he is clearly living rent-free in your medulla oblongata.

Tinubu himself said that if he doesn’t deliver stable electricity, Nigerians shouldn’t vote for him when he comes back seeking a second term.

We’re just holding him accountable to his own promise.

Why are you believing this propaganda lie against Tinubu and All Promises Cancelled, APC?

Don’t you trust Buhari, Fashola, Tinubu, Pẹnkẹlẹmẹs and other leaders of A-looter Propaganda Congress, APC? They promised us electricity in six months if we replace PDP prosperity with their extreme poverty shege, and they have delivered it.

When Buhari and APC failed to deliver stable electricity in 2019, did we not reinforce their extreme poverty shege and even rewarded Tinubu with his Emilokan turn in 2023, because he packaged Buhari as APC change messiah four years after calling him expired huh

How much accountability for promises made, have you achieved since 1999 with your own local government councillors and chairmen, state lawmakers and governors, senators and representatives?

Interesting attempt at rewriting history, but let’s stay focused.

Tinubu said Nigerians shouldn’t re-elect him if he fails to deliver stable electricity. That’s the benchmark he set for himself.

Deflecting to 2019 doesn’t switch the lights on in 2026.

We’re not discussing everyone since 1999, we’re discussing the man who asked to be judged by results

Electricity supply will drop further. I care less about the reasons given. When it gets to that point it, the tariff will be increased. Aso Rock going off grid should send a message than we all must endeavour to do the same.

This is what happens every year

Imagine I have a hole in my roof which leaks during the rainy season, when the dry season arrives shouldn't I take preventive measures to prevent a reoccurrence

What measures were put in place as back up to prevent gas shortages from happening

I really don't understand your thought process. I'd love to understand it.

Is Obi the President?
Tinubu boldly declared that we should NOT vote him for second term if he doesn't provide 24/7 electricity. Guess what? Under Tinubu, fraudulent band system was introduced, but the national grid has fallen so far, we don't understand again.
