Team are now better in winning midfield battles even with average players. There was a time when a central midfielder could receive the ball, turn comfortably, and assess options. Now, with teams staying compact and squeezing central areas, that luxury is rare. The second the ball goes into midfield, there is instant pressure so instead of turning and progressing play, the safer option is often to lay it back to the centerbacks and reset. Infact Centerbacks are now more crucial in build up play than ever that's why comparing players of different era is a no no.

I beg to differ the luxury is not rare. The recent crop of players are not just quality enough

There is still this luxury afforded to these players, but they do not just have the quality enough to do what is attacking enough.

Things that were done effortlessly by previous players now seems like rocket science to present day players.

For example at Chelsea i have seen Enzo Fernández having a bad touch even with minimum pressure. Can't simply turn on his marker.

I have seen enough midfielder in the age refuses to give a diagonal pass because he is unsure of himself and will resort to safe back passing.
