The current Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) ordered the assassination of a journalist - Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul in 2018. The guy was murdered right inside the Saudi Embassy. It caused a global outrage. Yet, the US continued to hail and praise this man - MBS -, gave him red carpet reception when he visited the US and even Trump had to insult a US journalist who asked the Prince questions about Khassogi murder in the white house.

Why? Just because the US wanted to do billions of dollars business with Saudi and also wanted MBS to invest in the US.

The US facilitated this same Ayatollah regime to overthrow the Shah regime in Iran. They were once friends.

During the islamic revolution, the iranian military wanted to confront the revolution and protected the Shah Government but the United States pressured the Iranian military not to intervene. This made the islamic revolution to be successful.

The Iranian military's intervention wouldn't have amounted to anything because by these time the general Iranian populace was ready to die for the revolution.
Secondly, the military was already known for brutal crackdowns on any form of opposition. However, seeing that whole country was ready to be "un-alived" sent a very critical message to Pentagon at the time. Don't forget the religious aspect of these revolution. So seeing that these fanatics were ready to be un-alived for the revolution, US didn't want to be part of it. So they pull off, and adviced the Shah to back down.
