Identities of 12 APC Senators, who are lining up for governorship seat in their states

According to Nigerian Tribune, on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at least 12 Senate members are running for governorships in their states in the 2027 general election. Following INEC's announcement of the official election timetable, political activities have increased nationwide.

Reported that numerous senators seeking state executive position have increased constituency consultations and grassroots mobilisation. The legislators are from the North-West, North-East, North-Central, and South-West geopolitical zones.

Senate members are running for governorships in their states in the 2027 general election. Following INEC's announcement of the official election timetable, political activities have increased nationwide.

Reported that numerous senators seeking state executive position have increased constituency consultations and grassroots mobilisation. The legislators are from the North-West, North-East, North-Central, and South-West geopolitical zones.

Senators from the South-East and South-South have not yet declared governorship ambitions, although sources say they may as the political season advances. Insiders claim the election notice has sparked considerable political manoeuvring.

Aspirants are working against tight deadlines to acquire party tickets and resolve internal problems before party primaries begin on April 23, 2026, and end on May 30, 2026.

On August 19, 2026, presidential and National Assembly campaigns will begin, while governorship and State House of Assembly campaigns will begin on September 9, 2026.

In Kwara, all three senators want to succeed the governor, making it a widely watched state. The trio is Senators Lola Ashiru (Kwara South), Saliu Mustapha (Central), and Umar Sadiq Suleiman (North). Deputy Senate Leader and All Progressives Congress (APC) member Lola Ashiru has announced his candidature.

He pitched voters on his credentials and experience at an Offa event. Another prominent candidate is Senator Adeola Solomon Olamilekan, known as Yayi. After serving Lagos West, he chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee and has openly sought governorship.

As he aspires to succeed Governor Abdullahi Sule in Nasarawa State, Senate Committee on Public Accounts Chairman Senator Aliyu Wadada has increased stakeholder engagement. He appears on campaign materials in all 14 local government regions, even though formal campaigns have yet to begin.

Ex-House member Senator Mohammed Onawo (Nasarawa South) is also involved in the governorship contest. Despite his silence, political experts believe he is considering his choices. Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi (Bauchi Central, PDP) has declared his 2027 governorship bid in Bauchi State.

His legislative experience, including as House of Representatives leader, is helping him mobilise party structures and youth groups. However, colleague senator Shehu Buba Umar (APC, Bauchi South) may potentially run for governor.

Senator Abdulfatai Buhari (APC, Oyo North) wants to succeed Governor Seyi Makinde. He said on the radio that he would not run for Senate again in 2027, indicating his desire to become governor.

APC Senator Sharafadeen Alli (Oyo South) may also run for the ticket. His empowerment programs include ICT training, Point of Sale equipment, and agricultural inputs to bolster grassroots support, according to reports.

Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano North) is a leading governorship candidate in Kano State. He has been public about his passion and is one of the most prominent senators planning for 2027.

Former Senate President Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan (APC, Yobe North) has been mentioned for governorship. He hasn't declared his interest in the state's highest job, but political watchers say it's frequently discussed.

As 2027 approaches, numerous Senate members are prepared to switch from legislative to executive leadership at the state level.

Senators from the South East have their hands tied,they may not want to waste money and contest against governors in the South East whom are up and doing especially Abia,then Enugu and to a reasonable extend Anambra.
However if you are not an incumbent governor,it is not wise to contest governorship in the South East under the leaking umbrella of APC,it is not saleable,you can only decamp to APC.
The South East voters are about the most enlightened voters in Nigeria,they do not reinforce failure.

The one person on this list who is not nursing any governorship ambition is the deputy senate president.
The reason is because of the defection of gov Abba to the Apc.
As for Ahmed Lawan, he will still make a u-turn to the senate. This is a man who has spent half of his life in the Nass.

Lagos needs technocrats as governor not another core politician. Check Lagos' history, those that performed were all technocrats not politicians.

Considering what Femi Gbajabiamila did in Surulere, I think he's the best candidate in the APC fold to govern Lagos State. Tinubu should position him to serve in that capacity.

Yayi is currently representing Ogun west district. He is from Yewa. The best man for the job as the next ogun state governor if you ask me. He has learnt from the Lagos blueprint and i believe that no candidate stand close to him for the next APC primary in ogun state right now.

President Tinubu will be more inclined toward Adelabu than Senator Buhari. He positioned Adelabu to become Oyo Governor since 2015, he even made him minister when he was a member of Accord Party.
