Why Do Nigerians Call People Without University Degrees Illiterates? by kpankpangolo(op): 5:12pm On Mar 05
Somebody should explain to me. It’s not the same in sane climes. I understand it’s not a suitable word but some people with only SSCE qualifications are so annoying that I blurt the word to destroy their self esteem.

If you hold a ssce or olevel, you are not an illiterate. You can still understand and contribute to the society, you are literate. Literate because you can read and write.

So, you are the Nigerian who is calling People Without University Degrees Illiterates? And your reason for calling People Without University Degrees Illiterates is so you may destroy their self esteem?

Now this is interesting indeed. I wonder what it is that you are saying about yourself, and can't wait for Nairalanders to tell me what they see.

Of course. Show them a little respect or treat them like human beings and they start seeing themselves as above you. Calling them the word brings them back to reality. They are quick to brag about their peers who became graduates and stayed jobless for months or years. They however did a trade and gathered wealth before the graduate found his/her feet.

Because we don't know the meaning of the word literate.

A person is literate if they can read and write in any language. Take note, any language. Do you know that a lot of Nigerians are cultural illiterateshuh

People look at market women and think they are illiterates because they didn't go to school. Southerners look at Northerners as illiterate because they use a language they do not recognize as English to communicate 🤡

It got so bad that our currency was subjected to change because there was a foreign language written in scripts that

1. People did not understand because it was foreign to them
2. People thought, for religious reasons, it belonged to them 😂

Are Nigerians religious illiterates too? Though you have translations, many don't even read their books, they use another creation of God to help them read and say the message like sheep 🐑☺️

You are not alright at all. grin
Re: Why Do Nigerians Call People Without University Degrees Illiterates? by PigTormentor:
They mostly do that when they have lost the argument or are semi educated themselves.
Most of them lack the meaning of what an illiterate is. From experience, some of them barely made it.out of school but are always quick to call others illiterate.
They equate literacy with agreeing with whatever they think is right.
Re: Why Do Nigerians Call People Without University Degrees Illiterates? by SmartPolician: 8:10pm On Mar 05
That's because the vast majority of people who didn't go beyond secondary school cannot read and write. Their spellings and sentences are often terrible.

If you doubt me, check people's comments on social media. Being an illiterate means someone cannot read and write well.

Because it is a typical Nigerian behavior.

My Vice President at a big firm in a big engineering firm in the abroad has the equivalent of an OND.

There are also directors in other divisions with just grade 12 which is equivalent to WAEC certificate.

Some university and polytechnic graduates in our country are very elitist even though their social status doesn't necessarily match up to their claims

The minimum educational requirement to be president in this country is ssce. Better don’t insult a future president because of misplaced arrogance 🤣

Re: Why Do Nigerians Call People Without University Degrees Illiterates? by Offpoint1: 8:13pm On Mar 05
Because the ones with degree are Dumbos...
To them education is limited to four wall of school.

That depends! In Nigeria, with the low standards of education, a high school graduate could be no better than an illiterate. 🥱🥱

Your first mistake is attempting to compare a high school degree obtained in a foreign country to what is obtainable in Nigeria under the current educational system. 🥱🥱

Which clime are you?

In this clime that I am, and have been, college degree is the standard, but read and write is the definition.

But even the ones with advanced degrees are educated “phools” unless exposed to the western environment where applications reign supreme not just theories.

Because of colonization, Nigerians believe that literacy is the ability to read and write in English only.

I attended public secondary school in my final years in high school, and struggled with writing essays when I eventually found myself in college. Fortunately, during my first year of college, I had time to retrain myself in basic writing and grammar. 🥱🥱

Because Nigerians see university degree as a meal ticket and if you don't have it you are going to be a truck pusher.

That's what we were told when growing up.
