All Police DIGs, Senior AIGs To Retire After Disu's Confirmation As IGP by fergie001(mod): 10:00pm On Mar 05
All Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) and senior Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) in the Nigeria Police Force are set to proceed on retirement following the emergence of Olatunji Disu as Inspector-General of Police, Western Post can confirm.

The decision, which has already been communicated to the affected officers, is expected to take effect soon, according to sources familiar with the development. The officers were reportedly briefed during a meeting in Abuja on Wednesday attended by all DIGs and AIGs, a week after Disu’s appointment.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on February 24, 2026, appointed Disu, who was serving as an Assistant Inspector-General of Police at the time, as the acting Inspector-General of Police following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun from the top position in the force.

Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023 for a four-year tenure expected to end in June 2027 in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act, resigned citing pressing family considerations. The President acknowledged receipt of his resignation letter and commended him for his service to the nation in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Before his elevation, Disu served as the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Alagbon, Lagos.

In the Nigeria Police Force, it is an established tradition for senior officers to retire when a junior colleague is appointed Inspector-General. Although not legally mandatory, the practice is widely observed to preserve hierarchy, seniority and organisational stability within the force.

Among the senior officers likely to be affected is Frank Mba, a former three-time Force Public Relations Officer who rose through the ranks from Inspector and was decorated as an Assistant Inspector-General of Police in March 2023.

Also likely to proceed on retirement is Mohammed Gumel, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Intelligence Department at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Adebola Hamzat, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police overseeing the Department of Logistics and Supply, may also step down. He was appointed and decorated as a DIG in March 2025 and supervises the technical, administrative and logistical needs of the force, including procurement, works, housing and the Force Quarter-Master.

Yahaya Abubakar, who heads the Department of Finance and Administration at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, is another senior officer expected to retire.

Basil Idegwu, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Department of Research and Planning, could also be affected.

Bzigu Kwazhi, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Department of Operations, may also be impacted by the development. Kwazhi coordinates operational activities, crime prevention strategies and law enforcement operations across the country. He previously served as Commissioner of Police in Osun and Akwa Ibom states.

Other officers likely to be affected include Idris Abubakar, who joined the force as a cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1992 and holds a PhD in Psychology from the University of Abuja, and Adebowale Williams, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Department of Information and Communication Technology, which manages the force’s technological infrastructure and digital systems.

This comes as the Police Service Commission (PSC) has scheduled a promotion interview for seven Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) seeking elevation to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG).

According to an internal police wireless message from the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja, the interactive promotion examination will take place on Friday, March 6, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.

The interview will be held at the Chairman’s Conference Room on the 6th Floor of the PSC Corporate Headquarters located at Plot 64, Cadastral Zone, Jabi, Abuja.

The officers invited to appear before the commission are AIG Zacharia Fera Achinyan, AIG Zango Ibrahim Baba, AIG Isyaku Mohammed, AIG Margaret Agebe Ochalla, AIG Mohammed Abdul Sulaiman, AIG Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, and AIG Umar Shehu Nadada.

Those alleged of taking bribe or being corrupt should be prosecuted after retirement.

It's not business as usual

This is how we have used nepotism to destroy all our forces and paramilitary outfits
And we want to fight insecurity?
But when it comes to appointments, we're prepared to sacrifice good heads and experienced hands to accommodate tribal nuances and regional sentiments
This rubbish started with Buhari. Before him, it was largely minimised and seniority and operations experience took more precedence
Unfortunately Tinubu who should know better and do better has taken same posture
This approach by politicians will ultimately breed indiscipline in the security services and you can expect to be hearing of more coups as the presidency rotates and servicemen are sacrificed to balance the rotation

In this life, the downfall of one person is the lifting of another

Or

Put better

"The challenge of one person is what opens to door for another"

As a person is complaining his car is bad, the mechanic is "happy"

A coffin sellers gets to sell his ware with the demise of another person

As the family of this man is rejoice with the promotion, others are not that happy

The life nor just balance

This IGP position is more like a political appointment that causes sabotage to other senior police officers as a result of issues they did not cause

Every Police officer is by law required to be in service for either 35 years or until he clocks 60 years of age. No tradition is greater than the law. Why should someone be forced to retire early simply because one person got promoted over him due to consideration of a politician?
Re: All Police DIGs, Senior AIGs To Retire After Disu's Confirmation As IGP by vicshub(m): 6:46am On Mar 06
I quite aggre with you. Its not the law. It an unspoken rule stermed out of politics.

I agree with you. Makes no sense at all. If they truly believe the system is the best they should do same with the judiciary lets see how it will play out. See how we struggle with security issues here and there yet we tell very senior officers to go jome because of politics. Until we look inwards and replace the paddy paddy style with a merit based system of succession our security architecture may remain dormant.

You made some points but this never started with Buhari. Most DIGs usually retire with their IGs. In fact, in the history of the police force, only 5 DIGs have risen to the rank of the IGs. IGs are most often promoted from the AIGs.

That's not my point
I'm referring to selection of IGs and other service chiefs based on tribal and regional considerations instead of competence and seniority
Even if AIGs are the most competent to become IGs, picking based on tribal alliance affected morale and introduces indiscipline. For example, Egbetokun reached 35 years less than 2 years of becoming IG. I hear Disu will hit 35 years in 3 months or so.
This means that there are officers far less than 35 years who are DIGs who will retire because an AIG close to retirement was picked for IG. This started with Buhari who had the police act changed to accommodate MD Abubakar and now, Tinubu has also changed same act to accommodate Egbetokun and Disu

Questions must also be asked how some became DIGs without nearing 35 years of service meanwhile there are others who are close to 35 years and are still below that rank. Assuming both are equally competent then favours have been received by some and denied to others in the past.

In all services, promotion is not squarely based on seniority. An officer who keeps failing promotion courses can't be promoted simply because he's senior to those who pass
DIGs are promoted based on regional representation and also capacity in the department. For example, if there's a dearth of capacity in a certain department, an officer skilled in that area might gain accelerated promotion to cover for the shortfall. Also, since DIGs by the police act should be selected to reflect regional balancing in policing, a region that has shortfall in manpower might see the few officers get rapid promotion
The point is that the appointment of an IG shouldn't be held down by such consideration as ethnic or regional sentiments

We are creating internal affective conflicts in the security arm instead of solving the external aggression we face daily
