Posting of Reno Omokri as Ambassador of Nigeria to Mexico is a square peg in a square hole.

A few years ago, Reno Omokri was on the internet passionately explaining to Nigerians that President Tinubu was a “drug lord.” Not a whisper. Not a rumor. Full confidence, full threads, full energy.

Fast forward to today, and the same Tinubu has reportedly approved Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Mexico, a country globally famous for it's vibrant drug lord industry.

At this point, you have to respect the comedic timing.

It almost feels like Tinubu looked at Reno’s old tweets and said:
“Ah, so you’re an expert on drug lords? Perfect. Let’s send you to Mexico. Field work.”

Imagine the diplomatic briefing:

“Ambassador Omokri, your previous research and passionate commentary on narcotics empires will be very valuable in your new posting.”

Some people study international relations.
Reno studied Twitter threads.

This is also a powerful lesson in Nigerian political flexibility. One minute you’re writing essays about a man’s alleged criminal empire, the next minute you’re polishing your ambassadorial speech and calling him “Mr. President, my leader.”

The transition must have been stressful.

Somewhere in Reno’s draft folder are probably two documents:

1. “Why Tinubu Is A Drug Lord – Part 17”
2. “My Deep Gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for This Great Honor”

The only thing that changed between the two documents is the WiFi connection to power.

But honestly, the appointment makes sense.

If you once loudly identified the “drug lord,” who better to send you to a country full of them? You already claim to know how to recognize the signs.

Nigeria truly runs on forgiveness, reconciliation and premium levels of political shamelessness.

In fact, Reno’s appointment proves something important:

In Nigerian politics, today’s insult is just tomorrow’s job interview.
