Man Sells Sister’s Baby To Fund Mother’s Burial by QuinQ(op): 9:05am On Mar 07
Things happen in this country. The sister's eyes probably cleared after the 500K she thought was a lot of money disappeared!

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man accused of selling his sister’s one-month-old baby for N2 million.

It was gathered that the suspect, who resides in Igbogbo in the Ikorodu area of the state, allegedly claimed he sold the infant to raise funds for their mother’s burial.

The baby’s mother later reported the incident to the police, prompting the suspect’s arrest.

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Olohundare Jimoh, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti, for further investigation.

Speaking with newsmen in Lagos on Friday, the suspect, who admitted to the act, attributed his actions to financial hardship.

He explained that he came in contact with the woman who purchased the baby through Facebook.

“Poverty pushed me into doing it. My sister initially agreed to the arrangement,” he said.

According to him, the woman seeking a child asked him to bring the baby to Mile 2 after their discussions.

“I went there with my sister. A man sent by the buyer collected the baby, and the woman transferred N2 million into my bank account,” he said.

The suspect added that he gave his sister N500,000 from the proceeds, while the remaining amount was used to organise their mother’s burial.

He further claimed that after the burial, his sister began demanding that the baby be returned, alleging that he had used charms to influence her to agree to the sale.

My sister later claimed she was unaware that the baby had been sold and reported the matter to the police, which led to my arrest,” he said.

The suspect said he did not know the buyer personally and had no details about her residence, adding that attempts to reach her through the phone number used during the transaction had been unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of SCID, Dayo Akinbisehin, confirmed that investigations into the matter are ongoing.

He noted that the suspect would be arraigned in court once the investigation is concluded.

If poverty were a person, he would have died from too many false accusations. 😏

they should Stop blaming your choices on their background. Poverty never pushed them anywhere; they were just greedy or wanted to throw a massive burial just to show off and "belong."

Both of them are greedy and deserve to be punished. It’s pure heartlessness when people do wicked things and still have the audacity to blame it on poverty.

Lmao 🤣. When will this generation stop this madness of extravagant burials?

It is high time we stop this habit of glorifying death over life. It makes no sense to ignore someone while they are alive and struggling, only to start killing cows and throwing lavish parties the moment they pass away. That is pure "eye-service" and hypocrisy.

A simple coffin and modest rites are enough. The living still need to eat, and the economy is already hard enough. If that burial money was invested in a business or used to support the living, it would actually yield results. Instead, we spend millions to impress people who will forget the event in three years.

Even if you bury someone in a gold-plated helicopter, it changes nothing. Let’s learn to celebrate the living and keep burials moderate. We have to be better than the previous generation.

If we had a serious Social Service in Nigeria they will take that baby away from this unserious family.

Both the mother and uncle need to be locked up.

Selling the living to pay for the dead.....what is the definition of "madness" if not this.

The mother of the baby is as guilty and greedy as her brother. She had thought N500k was such a big mobey and just realized it isn't. Trying to claim she was charmed is the funniest thing I have read this week.

Hopefully, the buyer didn't send the money through PoS.

Heavy or, in most cases, unnecessary burial expenses are some of the lifestyle/cultural expenses that plunge or further push (in this case) many Nigerians into penury. If an older person dies of natural causes, pray, cry and bury the person within a week. It makes no economic sense to rack up debts to bury someone. Let alone sell a child to raise money to bury the dead. The person has died and haff go. Yes, it hurts, but just cry, pray and dig ground to bury the person.

Except that people DON'T forget it in 3 years. And even if they forget that family won't forget. I still remember my folks talking with so much pride about how the village chief came to our great grandfather's burial and fired a dane gun - once o.

These things ought not matter but people and their stupidity make them matter!

You don't understand. They can no longer locate who bought the baby. Also the mother who reported to police says she never agreed that the baby be sold
