Africa’s most populous country has launched a $750 million renewable electrification initiative to boost electricity access via solar off-grid and mini-grid systems. The electrification project involves 1,350 solar mini-grids across Nigeria, out of which 250 will connect to the national grid. The programme will supply electricity to 17.5 million people in underserved communities and is expected to muster $1.1 billion in private-sector funding. Currently, 15 other large-scale solar projects under the Energising Education Programme are already providing electricity to multiple universities and teaching hospitals in the country, with another 8 such projects in the pipeline. In addition, government agencies and public institutions are also already benefiting from the National Public Sector Solarization Initiative, which has a $74 million war chest and has reduced reliance on expensive-to-run generators. For global investors, Nigeria’s massive solar deployment harks at burgeoning prospects in one of Africa’s largest economies. With a conjuction of public funding, multiple projects, and private investment incentives, Nigeria’s nascent energy thrust might make history as one of the most impressive renewable programmes ever. Solar power is a brilliant idea for Nigeria, and the bigger the investment in this key aspect of the energy sector, the better for Nigeria's population. President Bola Tinubu is proving to be an innovative trail-blazer who breaks the mold and thereby accomplishes the impossible. From the new freeways that crisscross the nation to this massive new solar power project, the Tinubu administration has an eye ever on the future, and an unwavering resolve as its abiding philosophy, to usher Nigeria into the forefront of Africa's beacon nation-states. |

Sentiment aside, considering the rate at which govt makes ambitious plans with zero plans on how to implement effectively, this project will fail. I'm certain that the ~$16bn budgeted for electricity between 1999-2007 was way more ambitious that this and what happened with it? They will embezzle it. Now in this report, there is no information as to the start date and end date, no timeline of progress, nothing nothing. Just talks and talks. |

Ezmans:This new Nigerian solar project is only just being initiated so it cannot be expected to generate electricity right away. The biggest solar power installation on Earth is actually located in China, and NOT in Nigeria as claimed by the organizations behind Nigeria's new drive into this vital engine of economic growth. Whoever decided to make the false claim that the biggest Solar power farm facility on Earth is in Nigeria, is a wishful thinker who is being economical with the truth. That said, any venture into solar power at the national level, especially in tropical areas of the globe where the sun blazes down year-round, is a wise and judicious deployment of government funding that is worthy of praise. |

cule7:The $16 billion story is just political propaganda with no substance. Otherwise you can share verifiable evidence of the claim. How much was the total budget of Nigeria in dollars for the eight years Total budget o. What % of the budget was allocated for electricity generation alone during this period ![]() |

EDGEof2MORO:Are you doubting the truthfulness of the recent news by Pẹnkẹlẹmẹs minister that 150 million Nigerians have adequate electricity? That was a renewal of what Fashola made recent news about 11 years ago, when he said in six months he would electrify Nigeria entirely, once we replace PDP prosperity policies with APC extreme poverty policies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lba6Uf64Ogc?si=vV_D0X4KUvShraF6 |

Jakumo:Do you think that costly new freeways are the best priority for borrowed money in a country that has the highest number of extreme poverty paupers and out of school children? Should we not prioritise fixing existing roads and maintaining them regularly, as a better value for money priority ![]() https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85dz0pwF6LA?si=afMkvfC4COlz4Isj |

MMempire:SHUT UP AND USE YOUR BRAIN. Power cuts are a common feature in ALL developing countries, and they make up 80% of countries on Earth. Many countries have Access to Electricity rates that are far lower than Nigeria. Nigeria (pop 250 million) has an Access to Electricity of 61% of the population as at 2023. Compare that to Niger Republic (pop 28 million) with an Access to Electricity of 20%. Or South Sudan (pop 12 million) with an Access to Electricity rate of 5%. Or DR Congo (pop 116 million) with an Access to Electricity rate of 22%. Or Chad (pop. 20 million) with Access to Electricity of 12%. Or Central African Republic (pop 7 million) with Access to Electricity of 17% Or Burkina Faso (pop 24 million) with Access to Electricity of 21%. Or Malawi (pop 21 million) with Access to Electricity of 15%. Or Burundi (pop 15 million) with Access to Electricity of 11%. etc... https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/EG.ELC.ACCS.ZS YET BECAUSE YOU ARE ANTI-RESEARCH AND KNOW NOTHING ABOUT ANYTHING, SOME HE-GOAT FROM DRC, SOUTH SUDAN or BURUNDI will come on TWITTER and insult you and call you the ''land of darkness'', ''generator republic'' etc, to increase your inferiority in his eyes and yours, meanwhile HIS own country is the true ''land of darkness'', unknown to your little ignorant head drowned in self-loathing and complex. |
