ASUU went on strike in 1993, 1994, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2022.

In 2022, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (

) promised that ASUU strikes will be a thing of the past and that Nigerian students will enjoy hitch-free academic sessions.

In 2025, Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa (

) noted that “the Federal Government has addressed every request made by ASUU.”

On 14th January 2026, The Federal Government and ASUU signed a landmark agreement on improved salaries and allowances which ended a 16 year impasse. Academics received a 40% increase in their salaries and allowances - a huge commitment for the education sector and a landmark success story.

Challenges such as infrastructural deficits, high numbers of out‑of‑school children, poor internet and digital divide between urban and rural schools, etc still exist. However, WE HAVE MADE PROGRESS!
