Students and teachers of a school in the Ogba area of Lagos narrowly escaped death on Monday 9th March 2026 after a four-storey building housing the institution collapsed minutes after they evacuated the structure.

Students escape death as four-storey school building collapses in Lagos

The structure, which accommodated Yemco Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College, gave way around midday at 11 Adudatu street, behind County Hospital in the Aguda axis of Ogba.

Witnesses said the building came down barely minutes after students and teachers were hurried out of the premises, preventing what residents described as a likely tragedy.

“The students narrowly escaped the incident. It was just about three minutes after they were evacuated from the building that the structure collapsed,” the resident said, adding that the structure had not shown obvious signs that it was about to give way.

According to the witness, an elderly man in the area alerted the school authorities that the building might be unsafe, prompting the quick evacuation of the occupants.

Taiwo Ridwan, another resident, said the building showed signs of distress shortly before the collapse.

“At first, the house started cracking little by little. The window frames had already fallen apart. After some minutes, the cement body of the house began peeling off. Not long after that, the building just sank,” Ridwan said.

Officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service later secured the scene and restricted access to the area.

Part of the property used for residential purposes remained standing beside the collapsed structure.

No casualties had been reported as of the time of this report. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service was yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

Attempts to obtain an official reaction from Margaret Adeseye, the service’s director of public affairs, were unsuccessful.

This indeed serious... I believe they have been seeing the obvious signs but refused to let go the building before the stern warning from the elderly man in the area came also the building itself givitway for collapse.

Why do we tell ourselves to manage a situation that it's already worst...
Same happened to me recently on my way to orile from onipanu, not up to 20 minutes In the bus I started hearing a sharp sound of an iron under the vehicle scratching the ground as we got to Alaka, the driver stopped and adjusted the iron not up to costain the iron pulled out, the conductor dropped it inside the vehicle, we picked some passengers at costain, as we got to Nigerian brewery the second iron pulled out also, I never knew what that iron was protecting underneath the vehicle, both driver and conductor hid the info from the passengers, not until the man that entered from costain refused and wanted to see what it was bot the driver and conductor challenged him and told him is nothing hence we can manage it to orile, when the man got down he looked underneath and saw that the two iron meant to protect the fuel tank is gone, he told us he's a mechanic and we can't manage the situation immediately I hear that I asked the other passenger close to me to allow me come down and take the next bus, he refused and told me we can manage it, imagine everyone in the vehicle was sitting tight as if nothing is happening.
As I got down they immediately followed me both women and kids. Not up to a minute I got down behold the tank as started leaking fuel immediately. And could be more disastrous we we all agreed to manage it and if I haven't taken that step to alight the vehicle.

Let such mentality not happen to us. Amen

This is the problem with this country. We love managing things. Even during construction, I'm sure substandard materials were used and funds were mismanaged.

Thank God the students and teachers escaped safely. This incident shows how important it is for authorities to regularly inspect school buildings and other structures in Lagos. Many buildings are old or poorly maintained, and without proper checks, accidents like this could easily become tragedies. Safety should always come first, especially where children are involved.

The root cause is the incompetency of the control agency.

Did the agency make sure that during the construction of the building or conversion from residential purpose to educational purposes, due process was followed and none of their staff collected bribes to look the other way?

This is an issue across Nigeria.

See how they used paint to cover up a weak/defective building...

We should be intentional about quality and may God guide us when seeking accommodation of any nature.

Imagine camping students in a building that's about to collapse. Thank God no lives were lost.

One of my relatives who's an engineer had to stop a school building project he was doing for his client when the woman was being too greedy with costs and not yielding to professional advice. Eventually the building was demolished.

A lot of property owners in Nigeria don't like listening to professional advice from civil engineers and builders, everyone wants to cut costs and save money where they shouldn't, but this is the end result in most cases.

It's not an issues of managing. All these lagos building abi structures are very old buildings, so what do you except. These are the kinds of building that really needs renovation. Not the presidential houses and government houses

The same thing with speeding buses on the road, passengers will be quiet and won’t even scold the driver until the inevitable happens.

Bros, stop playing the tribal card.
I don’t live in Anambra, I live in Lagos. Besides this isn’t about where anyone is from. The point is that all states must ensure school buildings, and all buildings, are safe. Children’s lives and every life matter everywhere.

How would parents take the news that the children they sent to school, the school buildings collapsed on them

Chai! They wouldn't mind if the building is unfit if the owner is an APC party member. That's how our country is being run now

A residential building designed for a family of 5 or six was converted to a commercial building for maybe 60 or 70 people.

A bedroom that held husband and wife and maybe pikin is now holding over 30 people.

What could go wrong with the structural members?

An old structure that was built well wouldn't suddenly collapse just because it's old. That building isn't qualified to be called an old building in the sense that it's probably less than 20-30 years old. I know buildings in Lagos that are way older and still standing strong.

The average lifespan of a well- constructed building is 50-100 years and would even last longer with proper and timely renovation.
