Egypt raised domestic fuel prices by up to 30 per cent on Tuesday, blaming “exceptional” global energy pressures caused by the Middle East war, which has disrupted oil supplies and shipping routes.

The increases, announced by the petroleum ministry, apply to gasoline, diesel and natural gas used in vehicles.

In a statement, the ministry said the adjustments were driven by “disruptions in supply chains, rising risk levels and higher maritime shipping and insurance costs”, which have pushed petroleum product prices to “levels not seen in years”.

Oil prices briefly surged above $119 a barrel on Monday before plunging to around $84 after US President Donald Trump said the US-Israel war with Iran would end soon.

Diesel, one of Egypt’s most widely used fuels, rose by three Egyptian pounds, or about 17.1 percent, to 20.50 pounds ($0.38) per litre, up from 17.50 pounds.

Prices for 80-octane gasoline rose by about 16.9 percent, to 20.75 pounds per litre, while 92-octane gasoline increased by roughly 15.6 per cent to 22.25 pounds.

Prices for 95-octane climbed by about 14.3 per cent to 24 pounds, the ministry said.

Natural gas used for vehicles saw the largest hike, jumping 30 per cent to 13 pounds per cubic metre.

Egypt has raised fuel prices four times over the past two years under an $8 billion loan programme from the International Monetary Fund.

An October increase of up to 13 per cent was expected to be the last under the plan.

Iranians are seeing the Israeli bombers and jets from their rooftops and are confident that the civilians aren't under attack, while Iran is just throwing missiles here and there in densely populated civilian areas hoping for a hit. That's how we know the bad guys. Should Israel and the USA start targeting every structure and person in Iran, the world would start shouting genocide. Islamists and their supporters are weird.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described as mere tokenism the reduction of petrol price from N97 to N87 per litre, saying the petroleum product ordinarily should sell for N70.

On Sunday, the federal government announced the reduction of petrol price, citing the fall of global crude oil price.

But the APC through Lai Mohammed, its spokesman, on Monday accused the government of making a show out of deceit, saying “a 10.3 per cent slash in the price of petrol was a mere tokenism at a time the price of crude oil has crashed by about 60 per cent”.

It argued that the pump price of a litre of petrol should not be more than 70 Naira, alleging that at N87 per litre, the government was forcing Nigerians to subsidise the massive corruption in the oil sector by N17 for every litre of fuel.

At least it took several days after the war started before Egypt raised its petrol price.

What I don't understand is why Dangote refinery straight away increased prices shortly after the war started.

Why did the company raise prices immediately despit the fact it had fuel in in storage when the war started huh

What would it cost to let Nigerians continue to buy what was already in storage at the old price.

I just bought 8 dollars per gallon in America. That's almost 100% increase. It varies in different states tho.

Simple fact.

The Iran-Iraq War ran from 1980 till August 1988. During that time there were many riots over fule scarcity and petrol price, most prominent of which was the 1988 SAP riot.

That's fact.
