“I Can’t Cope Anymore” — Kunle Afolayan Reveals Spending ₦11 Million on Diesel in One Month

Renowned Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has expressed concern over the rising cost of diesel in Nigeria, revealing that he recently spent about ₦11 million within one month to power operations at his creative facility.

The movie producer shared the revelation in a video circulating online, where he described the current cost of diesel as unsustainable for many businesses operating in the country. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

According to Afolayan, the amount was spent over a period of about four to five weeks to keep activities running at KAP Village, his creative production hub.

Afolayan explained that diesel prices have increased significantly in recent months, with the fuel now selling for around ₦1,500 per litre in many parts of Nigeria.

The filmmaker said the sharp rise has placed enormous pressure on businesses that depend on generators due to the country’s unstable electricity supply.

“I have been really worried because I cannot keep up with diesel selling at about ₦1,500 per litre. In just about four to five weeks, we spent roughly ₦11 million on diesel alone at KAP Village,” he said.

Despite installing solar power systems at the facility, Afolayan said operating costs remain extremely high.

Like many businesses in Lagos and other major cities, KAP Village still relies on generators to maintain constant electricity for production activities.

He added that the situation has become even more challenging because diesel prices recently rose from around ₦1,000 per litre to over ₦1,500, significantly increasing operational expenses.

The filmmaker also appealed to financial institutions and government agencies to support businesses by providing accessible loans that would enable them to expand renewable energy infrastructure.

According to him, improved access to funding would allow companies to upgrade solar power systems and reduce dependence on diesel generators.

Industry observers say the rising cost of energy has become a major challenge for businesses across Nigeria, particularly in sectors that require constant power supply such as film production, hospitality, and manufacturing.

As energy prices continue to climb, many entrepreneurs are increasingly calling for policies and financing options that support the transition to alternative energy solutions.

While Kunle is a good film maker, he seem not to be a strategic business man.

R.I.P to Gazzuzz, As strategic as Gazzuzz was, if Gazzuzz was in his shoes, He would have moved not so heavy duty electric appliances off grid to use solar, then only buy lesser diesel for heavy duty electrical appliances that consume so much power.

He would save cost that way.

The accumulated 11m should be invested more on solar powering.

If government noticed that everyone is not relying on fuel again, the price demand will go down

Even Iran that is been blown up left right and centre, still has constant power supply. When I saw light near where they blew up, I shock.

The whole goal of a Nigerian is to outspend the system.

No Nigerian wants to fix the system. They just want to outspend it.

Once it start hitting them small, that's when they will cry out.

Unfortunately a bad system will get you one way or the other. If not through money, it'll be through emergencies or infrastructure in critical situations or via insecurity.

One way or the other, we die because of the system we have refused to fix

Omo.. farming in Nigeria is not easy, cost of farming is very high why farm produce is soo cheap that sone famers are quiting because of financial looses..
That was what Mr Obi was trying to say. Agriculture is production, is job creation, is the foundation of industrialization. But even this basic, foundational sector we just can't get right due primarily to inflation. Inflation caused by government mis-investments leaving farmers, producers, stuck between the rock of cheap imports and the hard place of galloping costs of production.

So I don't blame you for considering cutting back or stopping altogether. It doesn't make sense to risk expensive capital on a venture whose output is uncertain.

And we implore the government. Fight inflation. Fight inflation. Fight inflation. Stabilize not just the exchange rate but more importantly the rate of price rises of goods and services by strategic investment in the sectors that can bring down costs. Energy, transport, power. These should be top, top priorities. These are the only things worth borrowing for.
