Ohhhh. I am so in love with you and your comment.

Everyone knows there is no light and Kunle Afolayan went to build a light guzzling film village.

Like you no get business plan before you start? Or were you promised by God Himself that you would be getting free diesel to power it?

Ecclesiastes 10:10 (KJV)
“If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.”
Na so bros. Why did he even build a film village ? Nobody builds film studios anymore. A smart person always looks for the cheapest way to execute things. Me I work from home. My house is my office. I have saved transport costs and office rent costs. Sade Johnson uses her family home in Ojudu as her X1SJ Boutique, boutique downstairs, house upstairs. I find it extremely strange that very few people have adopted that strategy.

Let us say I run into billions tomorrow I'm still going to operate that way. I'd probably rent a neighbor's house in my estate as I expand.... not buy it.

People have to hold onto their cash and no matter how much money you are making always know the bad times will come.

I have bought cars for the future, my cars are rarely used, I take public transport like danfo when I must go out to buy things for my business, if I buy in bulk it's Uber or Bolt. My cars are just chilling in the garage and used for Church runs to make madame happy. If hard times come I will sell them.

I have phones from 2010 I still use till this day and still buy London used phones.

My eyes are wide open.

While Kunle is a good film maker, he seem not to be a strategic business man.

R.I.P to Gazzuzz, As strategic as Gazzuzz was, if Gazzuzz was in his shoes, He would have moved not so heavy duty electric appliances off grid to use solar, then only buy lesser diesel for heavy duty electrical appliances that consume so much power.

He would save cost that way.
How will you save cost when still running diesel gen for heavy duty appliances, do you know that diesel gen doesn't regulate consumption irrespective of the usage?

Omo.. farming in Nigeria is not easy, cost of farming is very high why farm produce is soo cheap that sone famers are quiting because of financial looses..
This is the more critical one. Most investors in farming are quitting and I still can't imagine what awaits Nigerians by August.

Farmers are running into losses and the other parts of the chain don't care.

You are a wise man , you see things as they are, not as you wish them to be, which is rare in Nigeria. My hope is that one day soon, I can bring together people like you, Tenza, Panso, Gerard, and maybe 100 more who share that clarity of vision, high agency , and brutal obsession to improve , If we can lay even the foundation for transforming this country, Nigeria might finally have a real chance.
After all, America was built on the shoulders of fewer than 10 people - Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Carnegie, Edison, Tesla, Ford. So maybe 100 is overkil

All the comments here probably didn't watch the video to the end.

He didn't complain about the set up or the economy. He was specifically asking for a loan. Unfortunately, as Nigerian business men usually do, he didn't mention the amount.

The amount he needs for his energy need (solar system) is between N500m-N700m. That's a whole lot. And he's looking at someone who will borrow him and wait till 10yrs to pay back? Not happening.

What he really needs is a major investor who will bring in like N5bn, expand the empire into something formidable and they keep eating together. But, again, like most Nigerian business men, na chop alone e dey plan to do. So, he hopes to weather the storms alone so he won't need to share his profits with anyone.
Na only you hear differently.

Weldone Oga differentiation.

I respect Kunle. And I understand him.

Like me, he has old DREAMS that the times have evaporated its economic value yet wants to accomplish in his lifetime.

You have disciplined yourself to focus on only VISIONS (here and now). Kudos to you.

PS
I almost got a Range recently yet I don't go anywhere. Why? I had been desiring the brand for the last 10yrs. But it doesn't make sense for my age and habits anymore. But it took God Himself during my quiet time.

I totally agree with you. We all have dreams and visions but our visions most fit into the reality. Do you think I am happy entering buses ? My father had a driver all his life and only drove when he took the family to Ikoyi Club.

I cannot afford to join Ikoyi Club. I'm a realist . My dream has always been to sell clothes and I'm living that dream. It is not bringing the money I dreamt of but because I'm into creativity I will not survive in MTN or Glo

Like I said, do not take for granted your grace of discipline. It looks on the surface like what others should do but most people just don't have that strong will to do what's RIGHT over what's PLEASURABLE.

Again, I commend people like you.

My phone is 8yrs old this year. And everyone around me is complaining about it. So, I understand you.

But just know that making difficult choices is not everyone's cup of tea. It will make you more empathetic of others decisions.

That's why I always recommend to people once they start businesses or projects, the first task is to get a business/project plan.

The second and probably more important, get a Board of Directors who will always tell you the truth.

In Africa, we often choose people intellectually lower to be on our Boards. That is like choosing a doctor who knows less than you do medically. Like how does that even make sense?

Very true. I think the biggest problem is always be realistic and don't build castles in the sky. The key to building your dream is make sure the market, customers and alot of people are dreaming the same thing. Don't dream in isolation since you need people dreaming of the same thing to give your their money to keep the dream going

The problem is we do follow follow to much. If you have to build anything in Nigeria you have to build knowing electricity is going to be a huge problem. In building a structure make sure Windows are very big in doing so sunlight will travel well in the building and ventilation also.
One of the greatest works of Architecture is the Aro Hospital in Abeokuta built by Colonials to treat mental illness among their own people. The windows are very plenty and wide meaning you don't need electricity for lights from 7.00 am - 6.00pm.
If you have been to Luth Hospital Idiaraba , the windows are so huge you don't need electricity for fans and lights from around 7.00 am . 6.00 pm also

We need to stop building like Europeans and start building our buildings like Africans because light is an issue.
You can't build Studios for shooting film and tv with large windows.

The offices themselves may have windows but the actual sets cannot have big windows.

1. It would be hard to control lighting and lighting is everything in film making. Imagine trying to shoot bright sunny day during rainy season and dark clouds, you'll have to keep postponing until you can see sunshine.

2. It would be hard to control sound. Every plane that flies over, danfos and horns in traffic honking will drown out your ambient sounds. Which means you'll pay extra to re-shoot or have the actors come in another day and do voice work in a sound studio.

All these cost production money, as you have to pay crew and cast so they don't leave the set until your production is done.

Sets are usually like warehouses, so no windows o

What I even said was building sets is a complete waste of money. Nollywood started by renting existing houses, they even wanted to use my house the only reason I did not allow was because I did not want a situation where they paid for 10 days they will not show up during the time frame and then want to extend it.

Sister let me be very simple and honest with you. I can create a movie done I just one room and it will win awards I will simply set up camera's in so many different angles and change how I edit the image. I'd use black and white for some scenes in the same room, it's all about constantly stimulating the eyes.

Kunle Afolayon is over hyped, he is not creative at all. He is not on the level of Lola Fani Kayode, that babe is the greatest Director in Nigerian history. She will do a film in a house and you will feel like you are there with them

The key to creativity is making the best of what you have and creating something no one has seen before. If Kunle Afolayon was creative he would never have built something he could not handle.

Have you ever seen a tailor buy fabric and start complaining about the fabric.

You are talking about danfos that pass buy. Let the danfos keep on passing buy the Nollywood we know was built by standing and acting on the road on roads that they had very little control of.... Look at Hollywood films were they control so much, Hollywood Is no longer making money because films lack originality and good actors are scarce. people are now on social media and no longer watch movies like they once did.

You don't make money by achieving perfection you make money by meeting need perfectly

Nobody wants to watch a perfect film people want to watch a film that touches them perfectly

Nobody wants to eat food in a very clean restaurant
People want to eat food that makes them feel clean.

It is never the production process, it is more how things are presented and how those things are accepted.

I feel you and onegai are seeing the same coin from 2 different sides.

You are saying the storyline is what sells now and not the building sets. And she is saying if, and only if, the sets are needed, then they should cost a lot of money.

Now, even in Hollywood, 1 movie, like Avatar, costs as much $350m (N500bn). For that budget, build the expensive set.

But what you are saying is, if all that Kunle wants to do is just simple drama, why the need for the astronomical budgets?

So, same argument, different viewpoints.

Over 20 years ago, my family home was used for Nollywood movies.

Over 10 years ago, I worked with Kunle Afolayan and several big productions crews that aren't affiliated to him.

I'm also lucky to have in my family someone (not Nigerian) who has worked with so many big Hollywood stars and has gotten production credits on movies you've downloade and made box office numbers.

I assure you, the reason nobody takes Nigerian movies seriously and invests in them (Netflix has pulled out even) is because of our poor scripts and poor production. Even when Netflix gave our studios money, they spent on production value, still did rubbish and chopped the money. Netflix was thinking we would be the next South Korea Hallyu, because everyone was loving Afrobeats. We've squandered that chance and hundreds of thousands of jobs and economic growth.

You can have an average script, some big names with average talent and quality supporting actors and great productiom values and make bank. Examples include Fast&Furious franchise. Nobody went to watch them for the plot, they went to watch them because they were throwing a vehicle through a building. That's great production value.

If you're going to shoot a whole movie on a single camera (your movie-in-a-room), better get the level of script that wins Oscars and a Director like Scorsese and talent like Kaluuya. Not Adesuwa Etomi, Toby from Big Brother and Funke Akindele. Only the old Nollywood guard from Theatre backgrounds can act.

Nigeria can keep half-arsing it and hoping to dominate via numbers. One day, Rwanda will get enough. Foreign staff to train their local staff and they'll take over (they're already catching up for Education Tech and they were chasing Film Festivals a few years ago). Then we'll be left in the dust.

Lighting chop heavy electricity and we are limited in what we can do (special effects will be very limited).

Another problem, like someone rightly said in this topic, is that he wants a loan but doesn't want to give equity in his studio.

Nigerians don't know how to collaborate with each other. So everyone prefers to do one-man business. If he's willing to sell stake in his studios, I'm sure he'll find investors.
