Renewed hopelessness on the beat. All the APC praise singers will soon be told to take a pay cut.

Over 20 years ago, my family home was used for Nollywood movies.

Over 10 years ago, I worked with Kunle Afolayan and several big productions crews that aren't affiliated to him.

I'm also lucky to have in my family someone (not Nigerian) who has worked with so many big Hollywood stars and has gotten production credits on movies you've downloade and made box office numbers.

I assure you, the reason nobody takes Nigerian movies seriously and invests in them (Netflix has pulled out even) is because of our poor scripts and poor production. Even when Netflix gave our studios money, they spent on production value, still did rubbish and chopped the money. Netflix was thinking we would be the next South Korea Hallyu, because everyone was loving Afrobeats. We've squandered that chance and hundreds of thousands of jobs and economic growth.

You can have an average script, some big names with average talent and quality supporting actors and great productiom values and make bank. Examples include Fast&Furious franchise. Nobody went to watch them for the plot, they went to watch them because they were throwing a vehicle through a building. That's great production value.

If you're going to shoot a whole movie on a single camera (your movie-in-a-room), better get the level of script that wins Oscars and a Director like Scorsese and talent like Kaluuya. Not Adesuwa Etomi, Toby from Big Brother and Funke Akindele. Only the old Nollywood guard from Theatre backgrounds can act.

Nigeria can keep half-arsing it and hoping to dominate via numbers. One day, Rwanda will get enough. Foreign staff to train their local staff and they'll take over (they're already catching up for Education Tech and they were chasing Film Festivals a few years ago). Then we'll be left in the dust.

If you would look at my comment, just 1 post before yours, you will realize that I agree in totality with what you said.

And it's obvious you have a in-working knowledge of the audiovisual world. I applaud that. Most people on nairaland only share opinions rather than experience or expertise.

I agree with you that we also lack good/seasoned actors and that's because everyone is chasing money rather than a career; Peller and Portable rather than Ogunde and Fela Anikulapo. But that's the reality of our times.

Solution? We will have to brainstorm on it. Together.

oga how will a board affect the cost of doing business? The guy is simply facing the operational difficulty all businesses in Nigeria face.
Hmmmm.

This is like someone asking you how going to a business school will make your business better. Or going to a football academy make you play better.

I don't even know how to answer that question.

Brainstorming doesn't work because the people with all the cards (running the industry) don't care. So you and your ideas will be ignored, unless you have skin in the game. Anakle Studios, Niyi Akinfolayan and some other young directors are trying to push for better productions but scripts are still lacking and every BBNaija star wants to become an actor, talent be damned.

When Afrobeats was hot, Nigerian Ministry of Culture should have been so aggressive in organizing guest spots, concerts, throw money at movie studios, music directors, musicians, performance, offered full support to concert organisers in every state, paid influencers to attend our concerts and pushed us ahead. Give them grants to offset these bills and make sure they produce content and push it everywhere.

Now Afrobeats is cooling down, Tyla has become its face and they're going to head to SA.

Nothing in Nigeria works because everyone wants to do their own thing and everyone wants flashy over substance.

We used to have really good production crews trained by the BBC.

I'm sorry but Nigeria is regressing so badly it's sad. I'm tired of saying "we used to have..." in every industry. Look at NTA, we went from having local television stations to relying on foreign content save for news and how many people watch Channels and Arise? What happened to all the other TV stations? We have no indigenous children's content anymore

Abeg I don tire

I have listened to you and heard all that is not going to work. And I became demoralized to even think on this further.

Maybe one day, we will find someone who says, "We must..".

Yes it does, but it will save us from these kinds of lamentations from someone who can afford N11m on fuel for his gen alone. In a year, he may be spending at least N100m! If he invests N80m-N100m on solar, most of his power problems will be solved for 15-25yrs.
The grid in Nigeria obviously has bigger limitations.
I hate it when people who have some means refuse to be innovative even in the face of a useless government.

Even Iran that is been blown up left right and centre, still has constant power supply. When I saw light near where they blew up, I shock.
The truth is Nigeria still has a very long way to go when it comes to social amenities and infrastructure. Sadly.
