Drama erupted in the Nigerian Senate after nine senators defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), triggering a heated constitutional debate over whether Enyinnaya Abaribe risks losing his seat.

During plenary presided over by Godswill Akpabio, questions were raised about the legality of Abaribe’s defection from the All Progressives Grand Alliance after the Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin cited Section 68 of the 1999 Constitution.

The controversy centers on whether a lawmaker can defect from the party that sponsored their election without evidence of a party crisis or division.

While other senators who moved to the African Democratic Congress cited internal conflicts within their parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party, Abaribe argued that he had already been expelled from APGA in 2025.

However, Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele countered that the claim of expulsion itself could trigger another constitutional provision requiring him to vacate his seat.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has now given Abaribe one week to provide a convincing explanation or withdraw his defection letter.

He was never stopped from defecting but he must lose his seat. There is no division in APGA except he is trying to create one. Even he is useless to his constituency.

These lawmakers kept quiet when Wadada went to Aso Villa, came out and said SDP didn't offend him but he wants to contribute to the growth of his former Party, APC. He defected without division or wahala, the one pontificating from Ekiti was tight-lipped then.

Anyways, they can go to Omotosho he will rule Abaribe out of order, I am sure of that 😂

One is after fellow female senators, while the other was caught frolicking and smooching a South African ashana in a luxury jet.

Abaribe will still win his senatorial district if contests as an independent candidate

Imagine the kind of response and pontifcation you will get from this Abia senator if this is someone from another party. He always claim to know the law but oviously he is a bloody hypocrite like his own. What a shame that such a man is still representing good people of Abia for many terms now as if he is the only one in Abia state. Many of his supporters will justify this but let it be against other person in the Senate, you will see them crying foul.
