The 1999 Presidential Election was a fascinating one. Chief Obasanjo, a Yoruba man won as President without winning any South Western (Yoruba) state. He won in the North, South South, and South East. (Results: OBJ in Blue 💙, Falae in Red ♥️). This shows that a regional party can't win a presidential election - you need national appeal. Interestingly, voter turnout was higher in 1999 than it is now.

Those were the days of Free and Fair elections... Just like the June 12 Presidential election... What we have today is a sham and electoral somersault often called elections... Where you see results from Imo appearing in Jigawa.... Where Wike and his foot soldiers will rewrite and manipulate election results and boldly tell you to go to court if you don't like what you see... |

Interesting! Katsina had more than 3 times the voter population of kano? None of the Yoruba states wanted Obasanjo às President. He didn't win even one state in the southwest despite wining in all the other 30 states and the FCT. |

zyphr:Thats because there were only two people running for President, and both were Yoruba Do you think Yoruba's would have voted Tinubu if Tinubu and Osibanjo were the only two people running for President? |

That year when we all had hope of OBJ prison to palace. Turned out as the sanctimonious leopard that couldn't change his spots. God gave him the biggest opportunity on all sides and he failed Nigeria. We were on same level with UAE at this point if not ahead. |

gidgiddy:Obasanjo lost his state, his local government, his ward, and his polling booth. That speaks volumes and needs no analysis. |

Olu Falae was the Obi of that time. I like the way the contestants were from the same region. When it's time for another region, the 2 contestants should come from same. |

zyphr:Because they knew he wasn't a democrat and not an heir to the Abiola '93 win they were fighting/struggling for. The AD guys were like a continuation of the SDP/Abiola loyalists. OBJ was seen as military set, no different from the IBBs and Abachas and Buharis then. Took a while to convince majority of the South West to 'forgive' or connect with any of them. The SW resisted and suffered from military the most. From Awolowo to Fela to Abiola and the NADECO guys. Interestingly, by 2003, OBJ had his 'revenge' on the SW and captured ALL the states, except the last man standing's state, in his military-style do-or-die rigging machinery. The powers that be didn't see Jagaban coming or conquerable. Till date, they still continue to throw everything possible at him, but he apparently has God's backing. |

See how our Igbo brothers voted for OBJ....then there was no politics of tribe or ethnicity...sadly, today's politics is a bad taste to d world |

OBJ lost all western state because they never trusted him |
| Re: Check Out 1999 Presidential Results by success1smyn(m): 12:11pm On Mar 14 |
Freshtruth:Voter turnout was high, no doubt, but what usually happened then was that multiple voting was very common. The INEC officials would wait for some time after everyone in the queue had finished voting and allow many of them to thumbprint the remaining ballot papers. |
| Re: Check Out 1999 Presidential Results by Debroslink: 12:13pm On Mar 14 |
saintkel:Actually, there was tribalism. Obasanjo was seen then as a whole Nigerian and less Yoruba, while Falae was seen as a more Yoruba... If you get my drift... That's why Falae had more votes in SW and lost in other Geo-politician zones. |

PulaPower:Maurice Iwu didn't handle the 1999 Presidential Election Ephraim Akpata, a retired Supreme Court Judge did, unfortunately, he died a year later. Iwu was 2007 in what we all believe is the worst ever in this country. |
