I remember this election. Was in Secondary School then. Obasanjo used prison to palace fallacy to win people's heart. Obasanjo dealt with us in southwest after he won. He didn't do anything to develop the southwest. Instead he developed the north and south east. He has forgotten that he's coming back to his base.

Because they knew he wasn't a democrat and not an heir to the Abiola '93 win they were fighting/struggling for. The AD guys were like a continuation of the SDP/Abiola loyalists. The SW resisted and suffered from military the most. From Awolowo to Fela to Abiola and the NADECO guys.

You really captured it. Not only that South west see Falae as compensation for the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, they also see someone who will return the south west and Nigeria in general to the path of egalitarian society south west was known for brought about by Pa Awolowo and many of his followers.

OBJ was a political reject from his people because he rigged the 1979 election in favour of Shagari. He was constantly mocked that he had no political base. In 2003 he went on overdrive using federal might to muscle the entire West. Only Tinubu in Lagos resisted him.

None of the Yoruba states wanted Obasanjo às President. He didn't win even one state in the southwest despite wining in all the other 30 states and the FCT.

This was different. After so many years of military rule Nigerians were enthusiastic to witness civilian rule. Many hadn't witnessed election from birth. That's the reason for the large turnout.

The military might not have requested him directly to forfeit it, but it's certain that they probably sent different emissary to him to do that, because they were actively involved in PDP affairs, by extension, Nigeria.
If that election was between Falae and Ekwueme, we might might not be experiencing the police and other security brutality that we are experiencing today
