Beautifulday:The production of imported rice is highly subsidized by the exporting country. Some are even given export waivers, so as to compete favourably at the international market. Also, smuggled rice is usually cheaper than the local rice because the smugglers circumvent payment of duties and Tarrifs. This is an incentive this present govt has refused to offer our local rice farmers, because it wants quick fixes. Buharis notable successes in rice production have been set back 50 years by this govt. And this is just about rice. Wheat and corn farmers haven't publicly announced their lamentions yet. |

Elusive001:The same local mills and farmers that were pampered for years and instead of rice prices to have started coming down after a couple of years, the greedy lot kept increasing it year in year out. Don't worry, the master strategist will come close boarder against imports again so they can continue making their arbitrary profit and you people can start another round of complain that "how much did he meet rice, how much is it now?" Thank you for your attention to this matter |

nairalanda1:the more you try to justify rubbish, the more lame you sound abeg…so we should continue to buy their useless dirty and poor rice at exorbitant amount, rice that can’t even pass to sell for 20k per 50kg come enter 120k. The government closed borders and ban importation of rice, gave them free billions to boost them and all other things but they decided to kill Nigerians in return.if you want God to justify your labor, don’t justify rubbish here |

Fuckyoumod:A farmer pays different Islamic terrorists groups levies to avoid being kidnapped. He pays the same islamic terror groups before he is allowed to go to his farm for planting season. He is either kidnapped or levied by the same terrorists when he goes to tend his crops. The fulani islamic terrorists graze their cattle on the same farm. Then at harvest time, he pays the same Islamic terrorists groups to allow his harvest his crops. If tinubu has tackled these terrorists the way he made mouth during GEJ regime, it wouldn't have been this bad. The farmer has to pay other services and goods he needs that are already too costly due to Tinubu’s maladministration. Then, you want him to sell his leftover crop at one-one kobo bah? You are the wicked one bros. |

As much as rice is concerned, importation is the way to Go Both the rich and the poor eat Rice Daily Buhari gave them a lifeline by banning importation of Rice but they misused the opportunity through their GREED, Under Buhari Rice was a luxury, at some point a Bag of Rice was #150K, it was out of reach for the poor. E no go ever better for those Farmers, thank God for Tinubu, Rice would have been up to #200k by now Importation is a way to Go Any Government planning to ban Rice importation again will see the wrath of God Almighty. |

I dont pity those mills that have shutdown because they were all greedy and stored the rice to create artificial scarcity to inflate the price of rice when the border was closed. Beautifulday: |

Greed is still the cause of their problems. I remember when rice imports was banned. These local rice producers with their low quality rice increased the prices to almost the same as imported rice. Have you noticed that most made in Nigeria rice, when you cook in the morning and leave it without putting it in the fridge, by evening, the rice is already changing taste and colour. Very selfish local rice producers……spits |

https://dailytrust.com/importation-wipes-out-90-rice-mills/[/quote]Serves them right - Nigerians are just too greedy - They took advantage of the system, even after getting subsidies from government in form of fertilizers, tax exclusion they still went ahead to sell at very high rate. Government saw their insincerity and clamped down on their excesses. Now, they are crying. This is not just limited to farmers; an average Nigerian is like that. bankers will do their own, lecturers will do their own, tomatoes, fish etc seller will do their own. After all, it's not like government is subsidizing the imported ones, even at landing cost and logistics, they are considerably cheaper. Something is wrong with our people |

The problem is who will farm rice paddy for them. Especially at a cost that will allow them to mill and make great profit. The farmers want 50k for 3 months of work. By the time they process (fast duration - capital intensive operation) they can make average profit of 10k. But they are not satisfied with that business model. Miller's began pushing for importation of paddy from India. But the government choose to grant to only Imota mill, BUA and like 3 others. Only friends of government. The others have to source paddy locally to engage local producers. They are not satisfied. But that's the same blueprint in Sugar also. Dangote is planting only about 20k hectares of sugarcane in Adamawa. All the rest is imported as sugar syrup from Brazil and just processed here. That why nobody else can thrive in sugar unless you can farm sugarcane too. You can't import syrup. Basita fell off because farmers stopped planting for it. 3 years of profit & u will be smiling. 1 year of loss, maybe due to red rot disease. and you might never recover. Insurance no dey for farmers here. Back to rice. It was never about building mills but empowering farmers and settling for a long term ROI business model before you eventually recoup your capital. But the average businessman joined the bandwagon of milling when a policy shift favored it. Hopes to buy paddy cheap from poor farmers and process to sell for 3x markup price. I still admire their bravery to invest in Nigeria. But we consumers need them to lead a more patriotic business model. Only backward integration can truly help local rice. |

Lanretoye:Well, at the end, you guys will be complaining of there being no jobs , after all. Rice farming costs are more expensive in Nigeria, a country that has limited marshland, and no continous year round rainy season...plus most of our rice production is in the North, where the rainy season period is limited. Compare that with Thailand and Brazil, where rice farming can be done all year round, and with ample marshland and all year round rain to boost the production. It's not a matter of excuses, it's a matter of facts. (Remember also, your famrer in nigeria is living under tinubu economics too). |

| Re: Importation Wipes Out 90 Rice Mills by Misterone: 8:50am On Mar 16 |
Elusive001:Oga, the issue is standards. Are the equipments bought by these millers not up to standards? Why still produce rice with stones? If they're standard equipments, then there'll be no difference between the local and imported rice. If Dangote is producing low quality fuel, no one will buy it. And with the advantage of nearness to market, cheap labour and no tax on foodstuffs, local rice is supposed to be cheaper |
| Re: Importation Wipes Out 90 Rice Mills by gigabyte13: 8:50am On Mar 16 |
When you guys were selling local rice for #100k,#120k then what's the essence of locally made rice if imported rice is cheaper. Government gave you guys subsidized fertilizers even many of you guys got it free still sells at exorbitant prices . If imported rice is cheaper and affordable to hell with locally made ones |

You local rice farmers are bunch of criminals and wicked souls . When buhari gave you people the opportunity to survive by closing borders to support local rice to thrive, you people made life difficult for Nigerians instead by increasing price of local rice to a staggering N120,000 per bag instead of N20,000 atleast thereby causing hunger and anger all around the country. I commend president bola ahmed tinubu for opening the borders to give way for importation of foreign Rice into the country which has reduced the price to atleast N60,000 a bag. . But the president must do more to take back the price of rice to the N30,000 a bag that the APC government met it . Cc yarimo Seunmsg Freestuffsng A better Nigeria is all we want. Show workings to achieve that and we will whole heartedly support you. God bless Nigeria . |

Beautifulday:The whole idea of local rice production was not a well thought out one. Those countries we import from have competitive advantage. Their soil/environment favours rice production better than ours. They have far more yield with less effort. We should have focused on increasing production of things we have better advantage and export them instead of focusing on rice that caused untold hardship for the masses because of high cost of locally produced rice. |
| Re: Importation Wipes Out 90 Rice Mills by olaeffect(m): 8:53am On Mar 16 |
MONEY247:The same diesel that foreign farmers also use and purchase at the same international price that our local farmers are buying. Or do foreign farmers of rice get diesel for free? The problem with Nigeria is profiteering, too many middlemen that make profits even above the farmers. |
| Re: Importation Wipes Out 90 Rice Mills by Druss(m): 8:55am On Mar 16 |
Hmmm are these the same ones that misused an opportunity placed in their laps? They increased the price of rice to a point that government had no choice but to throw it open. Wrong call by the local rice consortium. |

| Re: Importation Wipes Out 90 Rice Mills by dalass(f): 8:57am On Mar 16 |
At least rice is so much cheaper now. Like, why would imported rice from a far country like India plus shipping costs still e cheaper than locally grown rice? The greedy farmers will even bag the local rice inside foreign bags to sell even higher than the foreign rice. Wickedness |
| Re: Importation Wipes Out 90 Rice Mills by youngrichnigga: 8:58am On Mar 16 |
Joke of a government, selfishly opened the border for rice importation for 2027 without thinking of the effects on local rice production, a real agbadonomics move |
| Re: Importation Wipes Out 90 Rice Mills by olaeffect(m): 8:58am On Mar 16 |
safarifarms:Gbam!!! Simple economics that they thought is in school. But when it comes to Nigeria's case it becomes rocket science. Ordinary maize grows everywhere in Nigeria. Maize can even grow on roads in Nigeria. But we rather grow the little ones that we will roast, rather than mass produce. |
| Re: Importation Wipes Out 90 Rice Mills by nairalanda1(m): 8:58am On Mar 16 |
gidigbam1:Fertilizer is not free, and has not been subsidised since 1993. Also the pumps have to be powered by...you guessed it...diesel. Which has risen in costs. Finally, Nigerian rice can only be grown within a limited period of the year. Thailand and Brazil have enough rainfall, and enough marshland to grow rice all year round. |
| Re: Importation Wipes Out 90 Rice Mills by almarthins(m): 8:58am On Mar 16 |
Beautifulday:In fact you nail it. Imported is cheaper than locally produced nigeria rice. Government no fit tell them say na greed kill them(farmers). I am sure if garri was to be imported too, e go dey cheaper than locally made garri. We be country of greedy people. |

007mega007:OK... What of the other costs that was mentioned? Freight, storage, insurance, etc. Those also contribute to the total cost of imported rice. So why are they still cheaper than locally produced rice? |
