Our forefathers communicated with inks and paper because that's what was made available to them at that time and I believe it'll be a shame for their descendants to continue that dinosaur technology in this current age.

I'm of the opinion that nairaland should have a voice note option, especially for credible account. How the moderators of nairaland determine if an account is credible or not is what I leave to their experience and administration. They've come a long way as a platform and I trust that they are in the best capacity to know what's okay for them and their thousands of users.

And on second thoughts, they could decide to make this functionality available to all users, provided each user can streamline the contents they'd love to pay attention to.

A forum where its spambot deletes comments randomly. I laugh at the idea of it implementing voice notes. Till today, Nairaland has not gotten the ability to IP block trolls.

My man, I did not come to debate. I just want you to list a forum or two where such is possible.

What's wrong with Nairaland being the first?

Short voicenotes aren't a bad idea... Maybe 10-30secs max .... Some audios if properly optimized consumes lesser space than images

You don't know how web development works, adding that features Mr seun will need to recreate the full architecture of this website. Then ask yourself if it worth it?

You can only advice him to plug the forum in into a web socket for real time conversation. I think that will work.

This got me thinking: What if each nairaland user has the option to attach an optimised voice note to their profile, where they introduce themselves, their preferences, what they seek from nairaland site and so on. It could even be a simple 'Hi'
And the voice note should be highly optimised because of storage space on the server side of nairaland.

We're even allowed to post pictures of 4mb. Wouldn't a voice note of that capacity be worth it?

Storage isn't really the hard part — a 30-second Opus audio clip at decent quality is maybe 60-80KB, smaller than most images people post here. The real problem is moderation.

Text is easy to scan automatically for spam, slurs, and rule violations. Audio is much harder. You'd need speech-to-text on every clip before it goes live, which adds cost and latency, and still misses a lot. That's a big liability for a platform like Nairaland that's already understaffed for moderation.

The profile voice intro idea at the end of the thread is more practical actually. One clip per user, vetted when set — that's doable without breaking the moderation model.
