The bolded is not completely true due to a lot of reasons.

But in this particular case, you could have refunded the money back to the sender's account Incase you felt the source is not legit and could put your account in jeopardy.

1)Why didn't you refund the money instead of holding the money?

2) Did you refund the money because you stated, "as for the money, it's gone"... Clarify on what you meant about that?
If you did refunded the money back, post the proof that you did since you kept records of the illegitimate transaction.

3)If truly you are not a scam that they call you, you would have known better than to keep the money instead of refunding it.

Note: You could keep or seize someone's fund if the person gave you a charge back in your previous transactions and you could even pay him the balance instead if the money is more than the disputed transactions... This and some few other reasons but your reasons of holding his money is not a genuine reason enough.
