Nope.....long range has it's own advantage as well.....ships will most likely be of little or no significance in modern warfare in the case of two superpower countries fighting.....with enough long range and good missiles one can easily sink several ships and aircraft carriers.....and as for the points you raised about getting close enough.... Submarines are more effective for such and they're less detectable as well.

Left for me..... I'd prefer long range hypersonic missiles with an average navy than an advanced navy fleet without such missiles capabilities (at least intercepting them to start with).
