FLASHBACK: How Moroccan team staged walkout at AFCON 1976 finals

The 1976 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosted by Ethiopia was won by Morocco who secured their first ever AFCON title amid controversy.

Morocco players had staged a walk out in the deciding last match of the final group round and tournament, before claiming the vital point that clinched the title.

AFCON ‘76 was unique for the use of a final, four-team group round to decide the winner, a contentious experiment that proved to be a failure, and was rested after the tournament.
Morocco qualified for the final round as Group B winners, joined by Nigeria’s Green Eagles who finished second. Guinea also finished top of Group A, and second-placed Egypt completed the four-team final round.

With just two points awarded for a win back then, and one point for teams involved in a draw, Morocco won its first two matches of the final round, while Guinea drew against Nigeria, setting up a finale in the final match of the round between Guinea and Morocco to decide the AFCON winner.

Guinea went ahead on 33 minutes through Cherif Souleymane, but controversy erupted after the hour mark when Zambian referee Nyirenda Chayu showed Morocco’s Abdallah Semmat a red card for a contentious foul on Papa Camara. The decision led to Morocco players leaving the pitch in protest, and they stayed on the sideline for about 15 minutes as mediations continued.

Play eventually resumed afterwards with ten-man Morocco eventually finding an equalizer via Ahmed Makrouh’s shot into the top corner from over 25 yards on 86 minutes. The draw secured Morocco’s first-place finish with five points, one point ahead of Guinea to claim their maiden AFCON title.

The aftermath of AFCON ’76 was a return to the knockout format, and the introduction of the walk over rule. The rule awards victory to the side that remains on the pitch and the protesting team forfeits the match alongside a fine.

Coincidentally, Nigeria was the first beneficiary of the rule at 1978 AFCON third place match against Tunisia. The Carthage Eagles walked off the pitch on 42 minutes in protest, and Nigeria was awarded a 2-0 victory to claim bronze.

History perhaps repeated itself this year when the Senegalese team staged a walkout over a controversial penalty awarded to Morocco in the finals.

At the January 18 final in Rabat, Senegal’s players walked off the pitch, led by coach Pape Thiaw, in protest against a penalty awarded late in regulation time to Morocco.

When play resumed after a delay of about 15 minutes, Morocco forward Brahim Diaz’s penalty was saved. In extra time, Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal that saw Senegal become champions of Africa for the second time

But African football’s governing body stripped Senegal of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

In a stunning decision, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said on Tuesday that its appeals board ruled that Senegal is “declared to have forfeited” the match, a 1-0 victory.

The result, it said, was now “being officially recorded as 3-0” ‌in favour of host nation Morocco.

With this caf ruling, Africans go come they hate morroco undecided

Well, the rule came after the 1976 incident.

The referee should have refused the Senegalese entry into the pitch after they walked away, and there and then declare Moroco the winner

But having allowed them play and conclude the match, o ti lo!
But what does the rule really say?

Moroccans are losers wey no get shame

First Caf employed substandard referees

Caf again turned blind eye to towel wahala distractions to the oppositions

Same Caf allowed referee to continue the game after their silly rule was broken

Same caf saw the blunders being committed by the referees early enough, they ignored it and chose the worst of all the referees for the final

Are you kidney me Caf grin

Caf should be scrapped and given a new body

History of Previous Major Walk-offs in Football:

Czechoslovakia v Belgium (1920)

Czechoslovakia's players abandoned their shot at gold at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics when they left the field 40 minutes into the final against Belgium in protest against English referee John Lewis, who had awarded the hosts a penalty and sent off Czechoslovakia left-back Karel Steiner.

Belgium were awarded the gold medal with Czechoslovakia disqualified from the competition entirely.

Lille v Manchester Utd (2007)

Ryan Giggs' late free-kick for Manchester United, scored while Lille were still arranging their wall, led the French side's players to walk off in a Champions League last-16 tie.

Having gathered by the touchline, they eventually returned to complete the match.

Uefa fined Lille £42,000, which included a sanction for poor security and organisation at the stadium.

AC Milan v Pro Patria (2013)

AC Milan midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng led his team-mates off the pitch after being racially abused by sections of the crowd during a friendly against Pro Patria.

Fifa applauded Boateng's principles and made him the first member of its anti-discrimination taskforce, but said it did not condone his decision to walk off.

Paris St-Germain v Istanbul Basaksehir (2020)

Players from both sides left the field during a Champions League match after fourth official Sebastian Coltescu was alleged to have used a racist term towards Istanbul Basaksehir assistant coach Pierre Webo.

When Basaksehir refused to return, the match was abandoned and replayed the following day. Coltescu was suspended until the end of the season and ordered to attend an educational programme.

Fenerbahce v Galatasaray (2024)

Fenerbahce started an under-19 side and then walked off after one minute in the Turkish Super Cup against rivals Galatasaray after their request for the game to be postponed - because they had a Europa League quarter-final against Olympiacos four days later - was rejected.

Fenerbahce were fined 115,000 euros (£98,000) and Galatasaray awarded a 3-0 win.

Colombe Sportive du Sud v Panthere du Nde (2026)

In February champions Colombe Sportive du Sud walked off during the Cameroonian Super Cup against Panthere du Nde after the award of a controversial penalty and a red card for captain Randy Ntume in the 69th minute.

The match was abandoned and the final outcome is still to be determined by the Cameroonian football authorities.

They are not the same in any way... Senegal will win the appeal on technical grounds. First, not all the players left the pitch, their walk out did not end the match, the referee continued the match.

The referee is to blame for not ending the match and award victory to Morocco

Portugal walked off in the semi finals of euro 2000 with France. And the game wasn't given to France. They came back for zidane penalty which he scored and France went into the final.

Important questions: did their walk out end the match, did the referee blow the final whistle and award the victory to the other opponent ?

Exactly, the referee should have called off the match in favor of Morocco on the pitch. Not allowed the match to go on and and then the defendants won and swapping cups of field.

I don't watch much football, but I think it may be better for Morroco to play in a middle East competituon, not AFCON.

Other than being in the same continent by dint of geography, there is zero connection between black Africa and the likes of Morroco, Tunisia, Algeria etc

Not in food, culture, or music.
Re: How Moroccan Team Staged Walkout At AFCON 1976 Finals (Throwback) by geoworldedu: 2:39pm On Mar 20
My own is that so far the referee didn't cancel the match on the field of play, nothing can be done anymore. The only thing that can be done is for the referee to be punished for not obeying the rule.

I want everyone to boycott the AFCON. I personally will do so. It has lost its value. Thank God it's only one and half Nigerian match I watched in the last tournament and that was Nigeria Vs Algeria and half Nigeria Vs Morocco. I can easily do away with the whole tournament abeg.

One idiot quoted as having inferiority complex for supporting Sir Alex Ferguson when he said AFCON is a kangaroo competition.
I hated that statement at first but later supported it with what happened to Senegal recently.
As in what nonsense is that all for
