If you weren't following the news back then, then don't expect me to go dig it up for you..... Ukraine made their intentions of joining NATO clear back then and NATO was willing to accept them regardless of Russia concerns.

Ukraine is a very populous country with a good military,land mass,a good amount of resources and shares a large border with Russia.....other one's are small Fry's compared to Ukraine.....Apart from Poland, I don't see any major threat NATO member in that eastern Europe to Russia and had Ukraine joined they would've been a much bigger threat to Russia than Poland.
