• In order to safeguard fair competition, transparency, and sectoral stability, the council considers it necessary to halt further implementation.

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has directed shipping lines and their agencies to immediately suspend the implementation of recently approved tariffs.

The directive is contained in a notice issued by the council’s management and made available to journalists in Lagos on Friday.

It stated that the order followed ongoing engagements with key stakeholders over the newly approved charges.

According to the council, the engagements responded to concerns about the timing, structure, and potential impact of the tariffs on port users and logistics operations.

Established under the Nigerian Shippers’ Council Act and appointed Port Economic Regulator in 2014, the NSC protects shippers, ensures fair competition, and monitors tariffs amid stakeholder concerns.

“In order to safeguard fair competition, transparency, and sectoral stability, the council considers it necessary to halt further implementation,” it said.

It added that the suspension would remain pending the conclusion of consultations and a comprehensive regulatory review.

“Accordingly, all affected operators are mandated to revert to, and apply strictly, the tariff regime previously in force,” the statement read.

It warned that any deviation would constitute a breach of compliance and attract sanctions under existing laws.

“The council will, upon conclusion of consultations and internal reviews, communicate a definitive position on the matter,” it added.

The NSC reaffirmed its commitment to effective regulation, protection of cargo interests, and promotion of an efficient and equitable maritime transport system.

It urged all operators to ensure strict and immediate compliance.

It is a good one.. But we need to be proactive in things like this... Cos our ppl are also funny... Things like this should be done earlier.. Before market prices soar... Cos our ppl once dem increase prices of goods... Dey won't revert back price even with such government intervention

But why is the Nigeria government constantly increasing tariffs at the ports?

The already skyrocketed cost of buying vehicles is about to blow up again!

Maybe a 2009 Camry will now cost 20million!

They will bring it back in 2027 if they win the presidential election. They will use the tariff as part payment for the last week agreement They had in U.K. for the financing of the ports...

Oga the thing taya me, we are dirt poor in this country yet pay more for a car than people living in 1st world countries. See you even talking of 2009 camry, a vehicle that should be close to a scrap yard, yet to buy such vehicle as a Nigerian you will pay a hand and foot. Clearing agents will tell you not to import a brand new car or any one less that 3 years old because the duty will be astronomical, almost the cost of buying the car a second time. Why also will customs use the price of a brand new car to calculate duty for a used vehicle? 35% duty, 35% Nigeria automotive levy, 7% something else, then you talk of clearing, Haba! You buy a dirt cheap £1000 old banger, ship it with £1000, then use over 4m to remove it from the port, Haba, government should fear God..
